BASEBALL: Austin Suders fires 2-hit shutout in Chambersburg's victory

LEWISBERRY >> Offense wasn't the name of the game for Chambersburg's baseball team on Thursday afternoon.

But the Trojans didn't need much offense, thanks to Austin Suders.

"He's had some tough luck this season," Chambersburg coach Bob Thomas said. "We didn't score many runs for him again, but he pitched a really great game."

Suders fired a two-hitter at Red Land, and the Trojans claimed a 2-0 Mid Penn Commonwealth Division victory. He needed no more than 80 pitches and got himself out of a pair of jams.

In the second inning, Suders walked a Patriot but immediately erased the blemish by picking him off at first base.

The Trojans (11-8, 7-7 MPC) were really in trouble in the bottom of the fifth. Red Land secured back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, and Suders hit a batter to load the bases. But he then induced a short popup, and Chambersburg turned a double play to end the threat.

"Suders is basically a pitch-to-contact guy," Thomas said. "He doesn't strike out a lot of guys, but he only had two innings where they got anybody on base. He makes you hit the ball, and he's pitched well for us all year."

Chambersburg managed just five hits and was led by Drew Betz, who had a double, a triple and an RBI.

In the fifth inning, Carlin Christian led off with a double, and Betz tripled to send him home. Tristan Daywalt then plated the Trojans' only other run with a sacrifice fly.
