BASEBALL: Chambersburg pulls out close win over State College

STATE COLLEGE >> Chambersburg's baseball team scored some early runs, and pitcher Tristan Daywalt constantly worked his way out of trouble to lift the Trojans to a 4-3 Mid Penn Commonwealth Division win over State College on Wednesday.

The Trojans (9-6, 6-5 MPC) scored three runs in the first two innings and manufactured what turned out to be the winning run in the fifth. With Matt Stonesifer on third and Hunter Brindle on first, Brindle took off for second, and when the catcher threw the ball to second, Stonesifer raced home to give the Trojans a 4-2 lead.

The Little Lions (9-5, 6-5 MPC) scored one run in the top of the sixth when Ben Shawley doubled and came around to score to make it 4-3, but Daywalt limited the damage all day. He gave up three runs (two earned) and scattered nine hits in six innings with four strikeouts to improve to 4-0 on the season.

"Tristan kept running through the rain drops, as we say," Chambersburg coach Bob Thomas said. "He didn't have any 1-2-3 innings, and they had runners in scoring position in every inning but the second. But Tristan settled down and found a way to get out of it."

In the seventh inning, State College got two runners on base against reliever Drew Betz, but Betz struck out the final two batters of the inning to earn a save.

Stonesifer finished with three hits and scored twice for the Trojans, and Kevin Carbaugh had two hits. Brindle finished with a double and an RBI, and Austin Suders also doubled and scored.
