BASEBALL: Wednesday's roundup, McConnellsburg uses big hitting night to take down Northern Bedford

MCCONNELLSBURG >> McConnellsburg's baseball team hit well and pitched even better in a Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference defeat of Northern Bedford on Wednesday.

The Spartans won, 13-6.

"It was a close game early on, but we had some big hits there toward the end," Spartan coach Brian Ramsey said. "We worked the counts in our favor and got some guys on base, and we took advantage of those situations."

Taylor Souders and Spencer Souders combined for a five-hitter, and Spencer was credited with his third win of the season.

"It was a tie game in the top of the fifth, and Spencer came in and threw well," Ramsey said. "He got us out of a jam, and that seemed to help us out from that point forward. Our offense was really brought to life tonight."

Taylor Souders went 4-for-5 with four runs scored, three RBIs and a pair of stolen bases, while Ryan Koontz was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

SOUTHERN FULTON 20, FANNETT-METAL 0 >> Southern Fulton capitalized on a big hitting night to take down Fannett-Metal in four innings in a Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference game.

Dylan Gordon, Tristan Douglas, Connor Litton and Trent Rider all had two hits for the Indians (7-2, 5-1 SHL, 4-1 ICC), who finished with a total of 12.

"We started out slow honestly," SF coach Dustin Fischer said. "But once we adjusted to him, we had a big string of hits in the third inning, and we added some more in the fourth. Cooper Grove looked really good today; his curveball looked nice tonight."

Grove earned his first win of the season and didn't give up any hits in the four innings. He struck out six and walked just two.

The Tigers are now 0-9 (0-8 SHL, 0-7 ICC).

The Rockets won the first game, 11-1 in six innings, and the second game, 12-1 in five.

"The first game, we hit the ball fairly well, but they ran all over us," Cardinal coach Randy Gelvin said. "When they got on base, our pitcher was kind of slow to the plate, so they got a lot of stolen bases. The second game, we didn't do anything real well, and kind of just hung our heads."

Matt Brown had three hits in the first game, and Brycen Hohman added a pair of singles. The Cardinals (2-7, 1-6 ICC) had only four hits in the nightcap.
