NEWVILLE >> James Buchanan's baseball team put up one run in the top of the first inning and that turned out to be enough in a 1-0 Mid Penn Colonial Division win over Big Spring on Tuesday.

"We'll take it. A win is a win," JB coach Scott Folmar said. "This is the first time all season we played a really clean game defensively (one error). We played well."

The Rockets (3-4, 1-2 MPC) got a two-out single from Michael McCartney in the first. The Bulldog shortstop then made an error to keep the inning alive, and McCartney scored on a throwing error to put JB up 1-0. The rest of the game belonged to Rocket starter Peyton Thomas.

Thomas pitched a two-hit shutout for James Buchanan, striking out two with no walks to pick up his first win of the season.

Folmar said, "The biggest thing for him was the no walks. He let them put the ball in play, and we played good defense. He did a great job of throwing strikes and keeping us in the game."

McCartney and Zach Vosburg both finished 2-for-3 for the Rockets.

BOILING SPRINGS 7, WAYNESBORO 3 >> Waynesboro committed eight errors and gave up four unearned runs, allowing Boiling Springs to steal a Mid Penn Colonial Division victory.

"The errors just killed us," Indian coach Greg Chandler said. "We've been playing that way for the last three or four games. We've been shooting ourselves in the foot with errors. And it's just routine plays. That extends the innings for them, and extends the pitch count for our pitchers."

Zach Stultz and Kyle Hoffman combined to give up just four hits, but it wasn't enough for a win.

Cody Cline was a big hitter for Waynesboro (3-5, 1-2 MPC), finishing with three hits and a stolen base. Hoffman also had two singles.

MERCERSBURG 5, SAINT JAMES 4 >> It took some heroics, but Mercersburg Academy pulled out an Independent Parochial School League victory in eight innings over St. James.

After scoring two runs in the top of the seventh to tie it up, Shugo Tahara led off the eighth for the Blue Storm (9-0, 2-0 IPSL) by reaching on an error. He was then moved to third on a fly ball by Beau Lowery, and Tucker Walle plated him with a single to win the game.

"It was a really good baseball game, and the St. James starters was literally throwing it by us most of the day," Mercersburg coach Karl Reisner said. "But this team just doesn't quit. Their pitcher must've gotten tired as the game went on, and he gave up two doubles (by Walle and Mike De La Rosa) to lead off the top of the inning before they pulled him."

NORTHERN BEDFORD 11, FANNETT-METAL 4 >> Fannett-Metal racked up nine hits but couldn't push enough runs across in a Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference loss to Northern Bedford.

The Tigers (0-8, 0-7 SHL, 0-6 ICC) scored two runs in the second and seventh innings, but the Panthers scored seven runs in the first two innings to jump out to a big lead.

F-M coach Kory Miller said, "We played better tonight and hit the ball, which is good. But we left the bases loaded with less than two outs three different times and had too many errors that shouldn't have happened."

Dalton Friese and Cole Funk both finished with two hits for the Tigers.
