BASEBALL: Monday's roundup, McConnellsburg can't handle strong hitting of Southern Huntingdon

MCCONNELLSBURG >> Offense wasn't the problem for McConnellsburg's baseball team on Monday night.

The defense wasn't even too shabby. The Spartans simply ran into a hot-hitting team in an Inter-County Conference game against Southern Huntingdon.

The Rockets racked up 16 hits en route to a convincing 15-7 victory.

"They hit the ball really well," McConnellsburg coach Brian Ramsey said. "They were a solid team, and we didn't match that today."

The Spartans (5-2, 5-1 ICC) had their share of strong hitters, with Garrison Crouse going 2-for-3 and Logan Little finishing 2-for-4. But McConnellsburg managed just half the hits of Southern Huntingdon.

"They hit a lot of ground balls and line drives, and they went where we weren't," Ramsey said. "They had some good approaches at the plate, and we didn't match that. Seven runs should've been enough to win, but unfortunately, we just didn't get the job done today."

FORBES ROAD 13, CHESTNUT RIDGE 9 >> By notching a few key hits and taking advantage of a ton of errors, Forbes Road snapped a four-game losing skid with a Sideling Hill League victory over Chestnut Ridge.

The Lions committed 10 errors, and the Cardinals (2-5, 2-4 SHL) racked up 10 hits.

Matt Brown and Brock Broadwater were both 2-for-5, and Forbes Road also got a pair of key hits from bench players Landon Mixell and Chandler Shimer.

"We needed a hit to the right side to drive in some runs, and Shimer did that," Cardinal coach Randy Gelvin said. "It went down as a fielder's choice, but it drove in a run that put us up by two. We hit the ball fairly well as a team, but our bench got some things done when we needed them to."

SOUTHERN FULTON 10, HANCOCK 2 >> Zach Clark had a fantastic game for Southern Fulton, which used some strong hitting to take down Hancock in a a non-league game.

Clark earned his second win by throwing five innings, allowing just three hits. He had two walks and two strikeouts, and the only run he allowed came on a Panther home run.

Clark also helped his own cause, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs, and was one of three Indians to hit a home run.

"Zach had another great night pitching," SF coach Dustin Fischer said. "He had only 52 pitches through five innings, and the only reason I pulled him was to get some other guys some work off the mound. He had a great day at the plate, too."

Dylan Gordon and Tristan Douglas joined Clark with homers for the Indians (6-2). Gordon went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, Douglas finished 2-for-3 and plated a pair of runs, and Connor Litton notched two singles.

"As a team, we finally showed a glimmer of what we can do offensively," Fischer said. "This was the most hits (12) we've had in any game, and it was a good way to come back after the way we performed offensively against McConnellsburg."

TUSSEY MOUNTAIN 13, FANNETT-METAL 3 >> Fannett-Metal started off well, but errors got the best of the Tigers, who took a five-inning loss against Tussey Mountain in Sideling Hill/Inter-County Conference action.

The Tigers (0-7, 0-6 SHL, 0-5 ICC) had their first lead of the season, breaking out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning, but Tussey scored 13 runs on just five hits over the course of the next two frames to secure the victory.

"Errors killed us in the second and third innings," F-M coach Kory Miller said. "We got our first lead of the season only to give it right back to them by making our own mistakes the following inning."

Hunter Kann and Cole Funk each smacked a double for the Tigers, and Kann swiped a pair of bases.

BROADFORDING 15, CV CHRISTIAN 5 >> Cumberland Valley Christian was still in the Mason-Dixon Christian Conference game until Broadfording ended it with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

"It seems like we just have one bad inning that really hurts and that one inning today was a nightmare," Blazers coach Keith Propst said. "The errors (5) happened at crucial times."

Dan Miley hit an RBI triple for CVC (2-2, 2-2 MDCC), Jackson Park had two RBIs and Austin Garcia was 2-for-3.
