SHIPPENSBURG >> Shippensburg's baseball team rebounded from its first loss in a big way on Tuesday.

The Greyhounds scored three runs in the first inning and pitched well in a 5-2 Mid Penn Colonial Division win over Big Spring.

"I thought we came back and played well," Ship coach Nate Rosenberry said. "It was a nice bounce-back game."

Shippensburg (3-1, 1-0 MPC) took the lead in the first inning. Daulton Brenize scored on a passed ball to start the scoring, and Job Kitzmiller gave the Hounds a 3-0 cushion with a two-run double. They added two more runs in the third inning to pull away for good.

The Bulldogs racked up nine hits, but Ship starter Teagan Staver (2-0) held them in check. He gave up just two runs on nine hits with five strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings.

Rosenberry said, "I thought Teagan got stronger as the game went on. We played good defense and got clutch hits. It was a sound performance."

BOILING SPRINGS 3, JAMES BUCHANAN 1 >> James Buchanan played a solid six innings, but walks and an error were costly in a non-league loss to Boiling Springs.

The Rockets (2-3, 0-1 MPC) opened the scoring in the fourth inning when Jared Pine scored Zach Vosburg on a fielder's choice, but the Bubblers tied the game in the fifth and scored two in the seventh for the win. Boiling Springs loaded the bases with a single and two walks, and Hunter Breon hit a ground ball to third, but an error allowed the Bubblers to score the go-ahead run. JB then walked the next batter to fall behind 3-1.

"We're just killing ourselves right now," Rockets coach Scott Folmar said. "We've been in so many games this season, but one or two plays continue to kill us."

Michael McCartney had the only extra-base hit of the game for James Buchanan with a double.

SOUTHERN FULTON 7, SOUTHERN HUNTINGDON 1 >> Southern Fulton got a solid outing from Zach Clark, and the offense backed him up in a Sideling Hill League/Inter-County Conference victory.

Clark threw six innings, allowing just two hits and no walks while striking out six.

"It was Clark's first start, and he did very well," Indian coach Dustin Fischer said. "He threw a heck of a game. It could be argued that he threw a no-hitter. Both were tough plays that could've been made."

Tanner Elbin led the Indians (5-1, 4-0 SHL, 3-0 ICC) with a pair of hits, and Branden Lynch drove in two runs.

CHESTNUT RIDGE 3, MCCONNELLSBURG 2 >> McConnellsburg scored two runs in the first inning but couldn't add on in a Sideling Hill League loss to Chestnut Ridge.

Ryan Koontz hit a sac fly to give the Spartans (4-1, 4-1 SHL) a 1-0 lead, and Justin Welsh notched a single to put McConnellsburg up 2-1 after one. The Spartans then loaded the bases in the second, but they couldn't push any runs across and didn't get any chances the rest of the game.

"We had plenty of chances to do damage early, but we just didn't capitalize on them," McConnellsburg coach Brian Ramsey said.

Spencer Souders gave up just one run on three hits in four innings pitched, and Taylor Souders had a double for McConnellsburg. Chase Novak and Welsh had two stolen bases, and Landon Richards had one. Welsh also finished 2-for-3.
