BASEBALL: Chambersburg's Tristan Daywalt one-hits Cedar Cliff

HIGHLAND PARK >> Tristan Daywalt continued his torrid beginning to the baseball season Tuesday afternoon, leading Chambersburg to a 3-0 Mid Penn Commonwealth Division victory over Cedar Cliff.

Daywalt allowed only one hit in his route-going performance – a bunt single in the fifth by Grant Brenneman – struck out eight and walked two. In his 20 innings so far, Daywalt (2-0) has allowed only six hits.

"He has pitched really well for us," Trojan coach Bob Thomas said. "He only needed 81 pitches. They got Brenneman to third on an overthrow on his bunt, and another bunt, but Daywalt got the next two guys. He walked the first guy in the seventh, but got two strikeouts."

Chambersburg (4-3, 2-2 MPC) was having a tough time with the Colts' Noah Malone, too. He retired the first 13 hitters, striking out eight of them, before Manning Brookens hit a one-out single in the fifth. Hunter Brindle followed with a base hit to move Brookens to third and a ground ball by Austin Suders scored the first run.

In the sixth, Trenton Ebersole doubled, Drew Betz was hit by a pitch and Matt Stonesifer bunted them to second and third. After an intentional walk to Carlin Christian, Daywalt hit a grounder to second that scored a run.

Thomas said, "They tried for the double play there, but the shortstop dropped the ball after the exchange. But they wouldn't have had him at first anyway."

In the seventh, Suders and Bryce Fiegl roped back-to-back doubles to give Daywalt a 3-0 cushion.

Cedar Cliff is 4-2 (3-1 MPC).
