BASEBALL: Thursday's roundup, Errors doom James Buchanan to loss against West Perry

ELLIOTTSBURG >> James Buchanan had more hits than West Perry, but it also had more errors, which led to a non-league baseball loss on Thursday afternoon.

The Mustangs (4-1) scored four unearned runs, including three in the third inning.

"We tend to kick the ball around a little bit," Rocket coach Scott Folmar said. "Kelby (Ramsey) threw a nice game for us, but defensively, we just made too many mistakes, and West Perry did a nice job capitalizing on mistakes we did make."

James Buchanan (2-2) totaled five errors.

Toby Sowers went 2-for-3, including a double and two RBIs, to pace the Rockets at the plate.

MCCONNELLSBURG 13, TUSSEY MOUNTAIN 5 >> McConnellsburg spotted Tussey Mountain a 3-0 lead after one inning, but then the tide turned, and a five-run fourth inning gave the Spartans a comfortable 9-3 lead in a Sideling Hill League/Inter-County Conference win.

"We left some guys on base early, but as the game went on we took more advantage of our opportunities," McConnellsburg Brian Ramsey said.

Taylor Souders was 3-for-5 and brought home three runs, while J.T. Barnard, Landon Richards and Chase Novak each went 2-for-4, with Barnard and Richards having an RBI for the Spartans (4-0, 4-0 SHL/ICC). Novak earned the win by pitching the first five innings, allowing five hits, one walk and striking out seven.

Ramsey said, "It was Chase's first start and he was up in the zone in the first inning. But the last four innings he threw really well – he located the ball and had a low pitch count."

MEYERSDALE 5, SOUTHERN FULTON 1 >> In a rematch of last year's District 5 Class A championship, Meyersdale got the best of Southern Fulton in a non-league contest.

Despite a strong game from Connor Litton, who allowed only four hits in a complete-game effort, the Indians (3-1) committed a pair of errors that led to a total of five unearned runs.

"Litton threw a great game for us; he struck out 10 and only walked one kid," SF coach Dustin Fischer said. "It sucks when you have twice as many hits as a team but also twice as many errors and lose a ballgame. Having a playoff-caliber game like this only four games into the season showed us what some of our weaknesses are." Trent Rider went 3-for-3 for SF, while Zach Clark knocked a pair of singles.

EVERETT 16, FORBES ROAD 15 >> Forbes Road came out on the wrong end of a sloppy game in a Sideling Hill League/Inter-County Conference loss to Everett.

"It was a fumblefest," Cardinal coach Randy Gelvin said. "It was a crazy game the whole way through. The fans enjoyed it, but we just came out on the wrong end."

Everett jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but Forbes Road (1-4, 1-3 SHL/ICC) came back with seven runs in the second inning before the Warriors put up five in the bottom of the frame to go up 9-7. After Everett pushed its lead to 12-7, Forbes Road scored eight runs combined in the fifth and sixth innings to go ahead 15-13, but the Warriors scored three in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the win.

Gelvin said, "I thought we really were in a good spot there with a two-run lead in the seventh, but we made a couple errors and dumb plays to give it a way. We basically just out-fumbled them."

Brock Broadwater finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs, and Weylin Mitchell finished 3-for-5 and drove in a run. Forbes Road committed six errors, walked 13 batters and hit two, and Everett had four errors, walked seven and hit one.

MERCERSBURG 4, HILL 2 >> Mercersburg Academy kept rolling with a Mid-Atlantic Prep League win over Hill.

The Blue Storm (6-0, 3-0 MAPL) used a four-run fourth inning and a dominating pitching performance by Beau Lowery to pull out the win.

"This team keeps amazing me," Mercersburg coach Karl Reisner said. "Their pitcher one-hit us last year, but we put it together today and Beau pitched well. We found a way to win."

Tristan Baker finished with two hits, and Deji Andrews also had a pair of hits. Lowery (3-0) gave up just two runs – a two-run homer in the sixth – on seven hits with seven strikeouts and no walks.

CHESTNUT RIDGE 10, FANNETT-METAL 1 >> A big second inning guided Chestnut Ridge to a Sideling Hill League win over Fannett-Metal.

The Tigers (0-3, 0-3 SHL) scored their lone run in the top of the fourth inning when Austin Raymer drove home Taylor Miller, who doubled. Ridge built on a 2-0 lead with a six-run second inning and added two more in the third to go up 10-0. The game was called in the fifth inning because of rain.

"It was a mess up there with all the rain," F-M coach Kory Miller said. "We're still making a lot of errors and putting ourselves out of the game early. They had eight runs on just three hits in the first two innings."
