A day after being knocked out of the Mid Penn tournament, Greencastle-Antrim's softball team came back to pick up a quality non-league victory over West Perry.
The Blue Devils (15-5) took over the No. 2 seed for the District 3 Class AAA playoffs and knocked the West Perry Mustangs (18-2) down to the No. 3 position by claiming a 7-5 win Wednesday afternoon.
Greencastle fell behind 2-0 and 4-3 early, but two runs in the bottom of the second put G-A ahead, then a run in the third and Ally Brown's solo home run in the sixth created the two-run margin.
Three players - Morgan Wagaman, Brown and Alison Shockey - each piled up three hits, while Jess Root and Mackenzie Oberholzer each had two. Brown ended up with three runs batted in.
Brown also did the pitching for the Devils, allowing eight hits, four walks and two earned runs, and raised her record to 9-2.
Greencastle will host a first-round game of the District 3 Tournament on Tuesday.
Northeastern 3, Shippensburg 0: Shippensburg managed only two hits off Brady Dolan, and suffered a non-league loss at the hands of Northeastern. The Greyhounds finish with an 8-10 record. Teagan Staver took the loss despite not allowing an earned run.
McConnellsburg 8-3, Hyndman 1-0: The Spartans pretty much locked up a spot in the District 5 Class A playoffs by sweeping the Hornets. McConnellsburg has won seven straight games and brought its record up to 9-10.
Garrison Crouse threw a four-hitter with seven strikeouts in the first game, and Brice Feagley came back with a four-hitter with eight Ks in the second game. Landon Richards was 3-for-4 in the first game, and Chase Novak, Quintin Miller (3 RBIs) and Matt Huston each had two hits. Justin Welsh was 2-for-2 in the second game.
James Buchanan 4, Littlestown 0: A solid, all-around effort led James Buchanan to a non-league win over Littlestown (16-3). Harley Rife and Nina Shatzer each had two hits for the Rockets (10-8), and Taryn Miller belted her fourth home run of the season. Jenna Mongold was tough on the mound for JB, throwing a four-hit shutout with seven strikeouts.
Tussey Mountain 11, Forbes Road 3: Eight errors harmed Forbes Road in a season-ending loss to Tussey Mountain, which scored just three earned runs in the SHL/ICC game. Courtney Schoen led the Cardinals (5-15, 4-12 SHL, 4-10 ICC) with three hits and two RBIs.
Hyndman 5, McConnellsburg 1: In the fourth inning, Bridgette Ritchey led off with a double and was followed by an RBI single from Tara Cutchall. But that was all she wrote in a non-league loss for McConnellsburg. The Spartans (6-14) managed just two hits off the defending District 5 Class A champions.
Mercersburg Academy 7, St. James 0: The Blue Storm captured the IPSL championship by blanking the Saints and finished the season with a 5-5 record. Elliot Hicks won at No. 1 singles and finished 12-2 this season, while the next-best record was 8-5 posted by No. 3 singles winner Shayan Ghodsi.
