H.S. Highlights: Trojan tennis ends with a bang

It's been a season with a lot of lows for Chambersburg's boys tennis team, but the Trojans ended it on a high note.

They won all but one match on the court Wednesday in Mid Penn Commonwealth Division action against Central Dauphin East.

"It was nice to finish the season with a win after playing so many talented and experienced teams," Trojan coach Brad Hill said. "The guys on our team deserve loads of credit for working hard to improve their game and maintaining a positive attitude amidst such a difficult season."

Naushair Hussain picked up a dominating victory at No. 2 singles, while Andrew Mooney had to eke out a win for the Trojans (4-6, 1-5 MPC) at No. 3 singles. He defeated his CD East counterpart, 6-4, 6-1.

"Andrew Mooney and Andrew Rife had the longest rallies of any match today," Hill said. "Mooney did an excellent job staying consistent and waiting for opportune moments to hit winners."

Both doubles teams had to battle for their wins. The No. 1 doubles team of Aaron Muldowney and Danny Muldowney won 6-2, 7-5, while Josh Muldowney and Ben Grove picked up a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles.

Hill said, "At No. 1 doubles, Danny used his speed and excellent reflexes to keep us in a lot of tough points, and Aaron closed out many points with winners from both the baseline and the net. At No. 2 doubles, Josh Muldowney dominated at the net to keep us ahead during both sets. Ben Grove found it difficult to get in a rhythm in the first set, but he eventually found his stride and played an excellent second set."

DOMINATION ON THE TRACK: Chambersburg traveled to Harrisburg for a track & field meet Tuesday afternoon and both the boys and girls teams knew they had won handily over a numbers-challenged Cougars team.

But the scores and results were not available until mid-morning Wednesday.

The results were glaring: the Trojans boys (2-3, 2-3 MPC) won 129-21 and the girls (3-2, 3-2 MPC) took a 136-14 decision, quite possibly the most lopsided score we’ve ever seen in track.

In the girls meet, in the 17 events (pole vault was not contested), Harrisburg scored points in just three. In 16 boys events, the Cougars failed to score in 11 of 15 events.

“The meet provided us the opportunity to put some kids in events they normally don’t compete in,” Chambersburg girls coach Chris Monheim said. “It was nice to see hard-working kids like Cassie Essis (800), Danessa Martin (1600) and Savannah Dymond (3200) get race victories. Camryn Greenlee looked great in the 100 and 200 and Cirsten Kelly looked good in the 400.”

Reagan Winebrenner had a PR in the shot put (36-9) and also won the discus. Robyn Guarriello won the 100 hurdles in a season-best 16.8.

For the boys, Nate Reed had wins in the long jump, triple jump and javelin, and Trayton Barnette took first in both hurdles races. Kelton Chastulik won the shot put and discus. Other winners included Quintan Barbour (400), Tristan Talhelm (800), Ezechiel Cadet (high jump), Bryan Lopez (200) and Patrick Zook (3200).

"We probably had 10 to 12 kids who scored points for the first time this year," boys coach Bob Walker said. "Harrisburg has a small invitational team that will score some points, but not all of those kids participated today."

Baseball

Southern Fulton 6, Clear Spring 1: Southern Fulton managed just five hits, but it was enough to take down Clear Spring in a non-league contest. Branden Lynch picked up his first win on the mound, allowing just two hits in four innings of work. He, Mitch Potter and Zach Clark combined for 10 strikeouts. Trent Rider hit the first home run of the season for SF (10-1).

"We were able to get Lynch some good innings on the mound and get Mitch Potter a few innings of work as well," Indians coach Dustin Fischer said. "With our remaining schedule and (Cooper) Grove nursing an injury, we want to be sure everyone on our staff is ready to go if and when they're needed."

Softball

Clear Spring 8, Southern Fulton 5: Maddie Baker went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs in Southern Fulton's non-league loss to Clear Spring. Lakyn Morton also had two RBIs for the Indians (3-8), and Cheyenne Miller finished 2-for-3.
