Girls basketball power rankings

We're just about two weeks into the girls basketball season so it's time for the latest power rankings. This list was especially tough with three teams still undefeated and having impressive seasons.

1. Central York

Central is undefeated with five of its six wins coming on the road. Very impressive. And Emma Saxton and Nikson Valencik may be the best inside-outside duo in the league. What's next for the Panthers? Just back-to-back games Dec. 18 and Dec. 21 against the only other undefeated teams in the league, Red Lion and Susquehannock. That will be tough.

2. Susquehannock

This was a bit of a surprise. After an 11-11 season last year, not many expected Susquehannock to leapfrog West York and York Suburban in YAIAA Division II, but for now at least, they have done just that. Led by a talented group including Ashley Stone, Anna Mahan, Tyler Williams and Taylor Tannura, Susquehannock has also started undefeated and boasts two wins over previously unbeaten teams, Donegal and York Suburban. The Warriors get Central and West York on back-to-back days next week. We'll know a lot more about this team after that.

3. Red Lion

A case could be made for Red Lion to be higher on the list. They're a very impressive team, and by the end of the year, they could be higher. But for right now, they're third. Of the three undefeated teams, the Lions' schedule has been the easiest so far with their opponents boasting a combined 12-23 record. However, no team has come within 10 points of Red Lion.

4. Delone Catholic

Despite playing four of five on the road, Delone Catholic has started off 4-1 thanks to Ally Shipley, Katie Laughman and the rest of the Squirettes stepping up their scoring output. All four wins have come by 19 points or more and the loss came on the road to an unbeaten Camp Hill team. Delone gets New Oxford and York Catholic back-to-back after New Year's.

5. West York

After falling to Bishop McDevitt, 48-47, in the season opener, West York has racked up four straight wins all in impressive fashion. The challenge for West York is seven of the next 10 games are on the road including two against York Catholic and Susquehannock next week.
