Poll: YAIAA football Athlete of the Week | Sept. 7-Sept. 12

Want some early-season surprises in the high school football season? We certainly can provide them from the YAIAA.

We’ll start in Hanover, where the Nighthawks are soaring high with a 2-0 start to the season. This from a program that’s won four games over the past four years.

The Nighthawks beat James Buchanan 33-0 in Week 1, then blew out Kennard-Dale 41-14 Friday. Such a performance had coach Bill Reichert’s squad singing a different tune following their Friday night win.

Some other teams that have struggled to capture wins in the past have some early-season victories under their belt in 2015.

Susquehannock, under first-year coach Steve Wiles, grabbed a ‘W’ Friday with a 24-14 win over York Catholic. The Warriors ran, ran and ran some more - 40 times for 186 yards in the contest. They’re 1-1, after a 1-9 campaign last year.

Two other teams that sit at 1-1 after unsuccessful 2014 seasons: New Oxford and York County Tech, which each won dramatic Week 1 games only to fall in Week 2. Regardless, it’s nice to see these two programs enjoy some semblance of success early on.

On the flip side of the coin, West York, York Catholic and Bermudian Springs - all programs with recent histories of success - are off to 0-2 starts this year. With that, we’d like to remind them it’s still early, and good teams get better as the season progresses.

With that, our nominations for our Week 2 Football Athletes of the Week. Vote now: (Click here to vote, if the below poll is not showing up.)
