First day of fall practice

Monday marked another first day of fall practice for YAIAA schools, giving me another opportunity to drive around parts of the county looking for fun opening day stories for a package.

While I didn't start at midnight like one year ago at Northeastern when field hockey coach Dave Marsh held a "midnight madness" practice to kick off the season, I did find an interesting tidbit from another field hockey practice at Kennard-Dale.

Rams senior Elizabeth Fix was ahead of the pack during the team's 2-mile run to get started. It turns out she is active with the Young Marines organization in Lancaster County and we chatted about that.

And while at Susquehannock to speak with new volleyball coach Darla Pennewell, I worked on some preseason football video during the Warriors practice. It was a treat to see former head coach Bill Kerr back at it as one of new coach Steve Wiles' assistants.

A stop at Dallastown for girls' soccer practice was next and I was pleased to find out that Wildcats coach Scott Austin is also a Michigan native and Detroit Red Wings fan like myself. Plus, at the same time I got to listen to the Dallastown band getting ready for its season in the parking lot.

It was a good day.
