Poll: YAIAA boys' Athlete of the Week | May 25-May 30

One state champion moved on while another saw its season come to an end Saturday on the boys’ volleyball court.

Northeastern had little trouble North Pocono, winning 3-0 (25-7, 25-16, 25-13) in the quarterfinals of the PIAA Class AA tournament. The Bobcats will now take on Holy Redeemer on Tuesday at Exeter Township High School.

Central York wasn’t as fortunate, however, falling to Seneca Valley 3-1 (29-27, 20-25, 25-20, 25-22) in the Class AAA quarterfinals.

This past week on the high school baseball field, Spring Grove fell in the championship round of the District 3 tournament to Donegal. The contest, played at Santander Stadium, went to extra innings, with the Eagles winning 11-5 in eight. It was a back-and-forth affair through the first seven innings of play, before Donegal put up six runs in the final frame to take control.

In Thursday’s semifinals game, the Rockets topped No. 8 Twin Valley 4-2. The Rockets were led by their lone senior, as Matt Brooks struck out 11 in a complete-game effort.

With that being said, Spring Grove will take the field in next week’s PIAA tournament, scheduled to face Pottsville on Monday at Walter Stump Stadium in Pine Grove. The contest is scheduled for 4 p.m.

In other District 3 tournament action this past week, No. 5 York Catholic was eliminated by No. 8 Upper Dauphin. After a run of successful seasons, the Irish had a young team in 2015 and fell to the Trojans, 12-5, in the District 3 Class AA semifinals.
