Poll: YAIAA girls' Athlete of the Week | Feb. 2-Feb. 7

Shot clock or no shot clock? That was the question posed to high school basketball coaches in the area, regarding the implementation of such a tool in the current game.

The answers were interesting, with 20 of the 37 coaches supporting such a move. And the reasons varied.

Many said a shot clock would better prepare players for an eventual opportunity at playing on the college level - where shot clocks are, in fact, implemented. Others said it would add to late-game strategy - ahead by two points, with the ball, teams would have to find the best shot possible as opposed to holding onto the ball and waiting for a foul to be called.

For those who support the current system, they feel it levels the playing field - teams can use the stall tactic to hang with superior talent. Also, they said, it adds a variation to the high school game that separates it from the college and the professional ranks.

Overall, an interesting talking point, even if YAIAA officials say it appears to be a long shot at the moment.

That’s our segue to our Girls’ Athlete of the Week poll, following the opening round of YAIAA Tournament play this past weekend:
