Poll: YAIAA boys' Athlete of the Week | Jan. 19-Jan. 24

It was a historic week for Kennard-Dale wrestling, which won its first-ever divisional championship in program history.

The Rams, standing at 13-3 on the year and 6-0 in YAIAA play, beat Susquehannock and then Gettysburg this past week to take home the honor. It’s significant for Kennard-Dale, which had one of the best wrestlers in Pennsylvania history the past four years in Chance Marstellar, yet have continued building the program following his departure to Oklahoma State University.

That wasn’t the only big win for a local team this past week.

The Susquehannock boys’ swim team received one as well, when it topped Northeastern 93-89. The victory granted the Warriors a 4-0 record in division and a 5-1 mark overall. It also clinched at least a tie for the Division II swimming title.

Susquehannock has another critical meet it hopes to obtain, when it hosts Gettysburg this Thursday. A win would clinch the out-right division title for the Warriors.

On the high school basketball court, Central York topped rival William Penn on Friday, handing the Bearcats their first divisional loss of the season. And from an individual standpoint, Hanover’s Dylan Krieger set a new career scoring record at the school. His 25 points came in the Nighthawks’ 65-60 win over York Catholic, and gave him 1,195 career points, moving him ahead Kevin O’Brien atop the school’s all-time list. O’Brien held the previous mark for 47 years.

In other significant storylines from the past week, Brandon Stoneburg of GameTimePA.com wrote a feature on the Spring Grove boys’ basketball program under the direction of head coach James Brooks.

And, of course, Spring Grove High School hired a new football coach when it announced former Rockets player Kyle Sprenkle will take over the program in 2015. Sprenkle replaces Russ Stoner on the sidelines, who went 18-25 during his four years at the school while winning a share of the YAIAA Division I championship in 2012.
