William Penn's Shifflett lifts York Ballers with last-second 3 at AAU Nationals

Trey, as a basketball term, means 3-point shot.

William Penn's Trey Shifflett has a knack for living up to his name with a game on the line.

Shifflett was at it again Sunday during the AAU Nationals in Louisville, Ky., where his winning 3 lifted the York Ballers' 16-and-under team to an elite eight appearance. The team, which includes York County locals Darian McCauley of West York and Jason Rebuck of Red Lion, beat Kentucky Elite, 67-64. The squad then suffered a two-point loss to the Tennessee Tigers and will play in the fifth-through-eighth place consolation bracket Monday before returning home.

As a sophomore last season at William Penn, Shifflett repeatedly knocked down buzzer-beating 3s to lift the Bearcats. First came a season-opening, four-team tournament, where Shifflett's shot knocked off Reading.

He later did it again in a road game at J.P. McCaskey and once more with a last-second shot at Dallastown. Shifflett and the Bearcats went on to win the District 3 Class AAAA championship. The majority of that team, including all five starters from the district run, are expected back this winter.

UPDATE

Down by one point, Jared Wagner's steal set up Spring Grove's Darin Gordon for the go-ahead 3 to advance the York Ballers on Monday morning, 57-55, vs. the Minnesota Comets. The York Ballers finished in sixth place after playing a team from Tennessee later in the day.

Like Shifflett with his last-second shots, Wagner stood out as a sophomore perimeter defender last winter at Central York. His play helped the Panthers capture their first YAIAA title in 40 years.
