Midseason YAIAA baseball power rankings

The upcoming week could do much to change the current YAIAA baseball landscape, especially for Central York.

The Panthers have emerged as a first-place team in Division I. They not only face this week the two teams currently battling them for first place but also Division II leader West York. The regular season is already near the halfway point, so let's take a snapshot at where these teams stand:

1. West York (10-1) -- The Bulldogs' won their first 10 games before running into PIAA Class AA champion Loyalsock Township on Thursday. The Class AAA state champs picked up where they left off last year, earning walk-off home wins vs. Red Lion and New Oxford. They also shut out Spring Grove on Wednesday in a rematch of last year's YAIAA title game.

2. Central York (6-3) -- The Panthers' only league loss came against a tough Northeastern team. They ended the week a half game ahead of Spring Grove and Red Lion in the YAIAA Division I standings. Central owns a win against Spring Grove and opens the upcoming week Monday against Red Lion at home. West York and Spring Grove fill out the rest of the week. All three are considered top-five squads in these power rankings.

3. Susquehannock (8-1) -- The Warriors have not lost since opening their season with a setback at Dover. They had a showdown with Delone Catholic postponed this past week, and it would have been a meeting of the Division III and IV leaders.

4. Spring Grove (7-4) -- The Rockets' last two losses, including one to Susquehannock, dropped Spring Grove a bit. As alluded earlier, all of that could change this week.

5. Red Lion (5-3) -- The Lions have played well while rolling in a group of young pitchers. Delone and New Oxford also could be considered for this spot. The Colonials have suspended games with Spring Grove and Central York, which were stopped with tie scores.

Also: 6. Delone Catholic (8-2), 7. New Oxford (5-4), 8. Northeastern (6-4), 9. Bermudian Springs (8-4), 10. Dallastown (5-5).
