Courtney Harnish and Meghan Small provide more York YMCA swimming goodness


Led by Meghan Small and Courtney Harnish the incredible York YMCA swimming program concluded another YMCA National short course meet by bringing plenty of hardware back from Greensboro, N.C.

Small dropped more than two seconds from her entry time and four from her preliminary when she swam a 1:56.16 to win the 200 individual medley championships.

Harnish swam a 16:09.77 to win the mile swim (1,650 yards), by nearly eight seconds. It was the fourth individual, gold medal of the four-day competition for Harnish, who along with Small also won two relay golds.

Small and Harnish finished the meet by teaming with Niki Price and Emily Ilgenfritz to defend their national championship in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:20.39, helping the York Y women finish an impressive second overall in the team standings.

Harnish also won the 500 free (in a national record time of 4:39.13), the 1,000 free and 400 IM. Small had already set a record in the 200 backstroke (1:54.01). She placed won the 200 free and took second in the 100 back on Wednesday.

In her final Y-National swim, Price placed fourth in the 200 IM with a 2:01.70, capping a hardware-filled Y career, that included a fifth in the 200 free. Leah Braswell finished seventh in the 1,650 with a time of 16:50.64, one day after placing third in the 500 free.

On Thursday, the four aforementioned swimmers all combined to set a national record in the 800 free relay (7:10.38).

Price, Harnish, Small and Ilgenfritz took fourth in the 400 medley relay. Those same four were sixth in the 200 medley relay.

Joining his female teammates in the medal count was Coleman Stewart who finished seventh in the 100 back (49.63). He also combined with Zach Snyder, Noah Stewart and Daniel Ross to take fifth in the 800 free relay. The York Y finished the combined team standings fourth overall.
