Unusual happenings during Central York at Red Lion swim meet

Thursday's Central York at Red Lion swim meet, produced a couple of things that you don't see very often.

For starters, check out this photo sent to me from Scott Fisher, whose son, Ben, swims for the Panthers. The event was the boys' 100-yard breaststroke, won by Central's Aaron Tate. But take note of the three-way tie for second place between Panthers Corey Wendt and Anthony Gemma, and the Lions Matthew Lanius.

With the advanced timing systems used in pools today, a tie between two contestants, even in close races, doesn't happen often. But a three-way tie such as this is really rare. I can't remember the last time I saw one.

Also, I would be remiss if I didn't mention how Red Lion and first-year coach Chris Doemland, shown at left, celebrated senior night, not only presented gift bags to the Lions upperclassmen, but also to the Central seniors before the meet - a very classy move indeed.

The gesture impressed Panther senior Haley Vaughn, who said: "They gave us a nice gift bag. We got a water bottle (and other things) I will use at school."

Doemland, who took over the Lions prior to this season is enjoying his first head-coaching venture.

"I really enjoyed my swimming career, but coaching, I feel like I am made for it," the former Red Land standout said. "I’ve had a lot of great mentors that have taught me how to be a good coach. I am having a lot of fun, probably the most I have had, but kids with like this, it’s easy to have fun."
