Point-counterpoint: YAIAA divisional football predictions

GameTimePA.com reporters Steve Navaroli and Matt Goul agree on few things. So what better way to exploit this than a point-counter point discussion -- or argument -- on who are the favorites in each YAIAA football division?

If they do find a way to agree, Matt will still find a way to argue against Steve.

"Or irritate Steve," said Steve.

DIVISION ISteve: Dallastown

Matt: Spring Grove

Steve: They return most of their skill players, including a three-year starting quarterback in Andrew Henry. The Wildcats were a few letdowns from being 7-4 last year.

Matt: Those mistakes have me wondering if they will rear their ugly head at least once this season. I like the Wildcats in a head-to-head matchup with Spring Grove because of their combination of size up front and speed (see running back Robert Catchings). I just wonder if a team like South Western and/or Central York will catch the Wildcats. One thing is for sure, I don't think the Division I winner will go undefeated.

Steve: I agree.

Matt: We're not supposed to.

DIVISION II

Steve: West York

Matt: West York

Matt: Hey, what did I say about agreeing?

Steve: Until somebody knocks them off and proves us wrong, you have to go with the Bulldogs. Although agreeing with you hurts.

Matt: OK, how about the Big Ten title?

Steve: I only wish I could argue that.

Matt: That's what I like to hear. Back to the topic, I fully expect New Oxford to be in position to challenge for the title. Looking at the Colonials' schedule, they close the regular season at Dover and vs. West York.

Steve: Speaking of Dover, the Eagles could make some noise in this division, too.

DIVISION III

Steve: Bermudian Springs

Matt: Littlestown

Steve: While this division is my hardest pick, the Eagles will still have a great running game and a sound defense.

Matt: Well, it was Bermudian which ended Littlestown's run in 2010, upsetting a 10-0 Thunderbolts squad, 37-0, in the playoffs and then going 10-0 themselves for two straight regular seasons. It's easy to dismiss a team graduating a polished quarterback, such as Dustin Crouse at Littlestown, but the Bolts have a good number of talented players: running back Dustin DeGroft and receiver/defensive back Austin Reynolds come to mind. Just like Division I, the winner doesn't sweep the field. Not a chance. I like Littlestown, Delone Catholic, Bermudian and York Catholic in that order.

Steve: Would it shock either of us to see division end in a tie?

Matt: Not at all.

Steve: Quit agreeing with me, Matt.

Matt: All you did was ask the question.
