Central York golfer Minkin ties for first at AJGA event

Gus Minkin will be just a sophomore this fall for the Central York golf team, and he gained some momentum this week as the upcoming season approaches.

Minkin tied for first Monday at the Performance Based Entry Qualifier at Talbot Country Club in Easton, Md. Minkin's 1-under-par 71 shared medalist honors with Evan Santa of South River, Md.

The American Junior Golf Association qualifier featured 84 participants. Minkin's friend and Central York teammate from last season, Evan Johnson, finished 26th after shooting a 76.

Minkin moved on to the three-day AJGA All-Star tournament, where he shot a first-round 75 to stand in 18th place among 72 golfers. The winner will get 12 stars, which are used to enter more prestigious events. Minkin earned four for his victory in the qualifier. At his current pace, he would likely pick up two additional stars. If Minkin falls from his pace, the top 50 percent still earn one star. If he moves up, the top 10 get four stars and the top three win eight.

Monday's qualifying event is likely the last time Minkin and Johnson will golf together at an event. Johnson is moving to Virginia this summer.
