Local athletes to be honored with Shipley Awards


The recipients of the 2012 Shipley Distinguished Achievement Awards and Special Achievement Awards have been announced.

These awards will be presented on May 5 at Sovereign Bank Stadium, before the York Revolution’s game against the Long Island Ducks. The newly elected members of the York Area Sports Hall of Fame will also be honored at that time.

This year also marks the first time that Shipley Award recipients will be eligible to apply for two $1,000 scholarships, one to a male and one to a female. The first two scholarships will be presented at the game also.

The Shipley Awards are presented to teams and athletes that have achieved at the highest level attainable within Pennsylvania, or at the national or international level.

The Special Achievement Awards are given to individuals or teams that have previously won Shipley Awards and have achieved at the highest level for a second time.

Shipley Distinguished Achievement Award  BERMUDIAN SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL

Austin Hartzell: The junior punter was named to the 2012 Pennsylvania Football News Class AA All-State Second Team. 

BIGLERVILLE HIGH SCHOOL

Casey Ayers: The senior second baseman was named to the 2012 Pennsylvania High School Baseball Coaches Association Class AA All-State First Team. His aggressive approach to hitting led to 46 hits in 20 games and a .561 batting average. As a result, he was named the Daily Record/Sunday News Division IV Player of the Year. 



Logan Howell: The senior catcher was named to the 2012 PHSBCA Class AA All-State Second Team. He added punch to the Canners lineup, knocking in 24 runs and cracking a pair of home runs. 

CENTRAL YORK HIGH SCHOOL

Hadley Swartz: The senior volleyball player was selected as an outside hitter on the 2012 PVCA Class AAA All-State Team. 

Lauren Moyer: The senior field hockey standout was one of 160 players nationwide to be named to one of the 2012 Harrow Sports/NFHCA All-Region teams. She was also the only local player to be named to the 2012 Pennsylvania Field Hockey Coaches Association Class AAA All-State First Team. 

DALLASTOWN AREA HIGH SCHOOL

Patrick Conroy: The senior midfielder was named a 2012 U.S. Lacrosse boy’s High School All-American. 

Bryce Cregan: The Wildcat junior central defender was selected as one of 32 players to join U.S. Soccer’s U17 men’s national team residency program in Bradenton, Fla. He’ll live and train as a member of the U17 national team for at least the next year, and could earn a spot on the American squad for the 2013 FIFA U17 World Cup next fall. He hopes to play soccer in college, and if all goes well, even pursue a professional career someday. 

Austin Calaman: The senior third baseman was named to the 2012 Pennsylvania High School Baseball Coaches Association Class AAAA All-State First Team. He helped the Wildcats to a YAIAA Division I championship and was named the Daily Record/Sunday News Player of the Year. He led the Wildcats in batting average (.479), extra-base hits (11) and home runs (3). 

Barrett Wingard: The senior volleyball player was named to the 2012 PVCA Class AAA All-State Team. 

Wildcat girls’ soccer team: The team was selected as an Academic All-American Team by the National High School Coaches Association, after compiling a 3.38 grade point average for the 2011-2012 academic school year. 

DELONE CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

Hannah Lawrence: The libero was named to the 2012 PVCA Class AA All-State Girls Volleyball Team. 

Cambria Wierman: The outside hitter was named to the 2012 PVCA Class AA All-State Girls Volleyball Team. 

Allie Mondorff: The setter was named to the 2012 PVCA Class AA All-State Girls Volleyball Team. 

Austin Noel: The senior linebacker was named to the 2012 Pennsylvania Sports Writers Class A All-State Football Team, and to the 2012 Pennsylvania Football News All-State First Team. He led the Squires with 153 tackles, 94 being solo stops. He was also the team’s leading receiver from his tight end slot, catching 23 passes for 483 yards, an average of 21 yards a catch. 

Lance Reneker: The senior kick returner was named to the 2012 Pennsylvania Football News Class A All-State Second Team. 

Brett Smith: The senior, a three-sport star, helped the Squires win back-to-back District 3 titles, and finished his varsity career with 1,248 points. He was named to the 2012-13 Pennsylvania Sports Writers Class AA Basketball Second-Team. He will play baseball at NCAA Division I Bucknell. 

DOVER AREA HIGH SCHOOL

Ryan Lamparter: The senior volleyball player was named to the 2012 PVCA Class AA All-State Team, and was also named to the PVCA All-Tournament Team. 

Tyler Lehman: The senior volleyball player was named to the 2012 PVCA Class AA All-State Team, and was also named to the PVCA All-Tournament Team. 

Bayleigh Hoffman: The junior volleyball player was selected at setter/opposite on the PVCA 2012 Class AAA All-State Team. 

Jacky Chen: The senior defensive back was named to the 2012 Pennsylvania Football News Class AAA All-State Third Team. 

Alayah Hall: The 5-7 junior guard led the Eagles on a 23-game win streak to start the season and was named to the 2012-13 Pennsylvania Sports Writers Girls Basketball Class AAAA All-State Third-Team. 

EASTERN YORK HIGH SCHOOL

Alexis Rhein: The senior volleyball player was selected as an outside hitter on the 2012 PVCA Class AA All-State Team. 

KENNARD-DALE HIGH SCHOOL

Rams powerlifting team: The team, consisting of Justus Phalen, Matt Vincent, Devin Walters, Aaron Affeld, Jason Cooper, Will DelGrande, Phil Herndon, Joe Reinke, Mike Young and Dan Creter, was crowned 2012 Pennsylvania State Coaches Powerlifting Association State Champion (Large School, RAW Division). The team also won the Best Newcomer Team award. Cooper (148-pound weight class total) and Phalen (198-pound weight class bench press and total) set state varsity records at the event. 

Jason Cooper: Was crowned state champion in the 148-pound weight class (total weight) at the 2012 PSCPA Powerlifting State Championships. 

Justus Phalen: Was crowned state champion in the 198-pound weight class (bench press and total weight), at the 2012 PSCPA Powerlifting State Championships. 

Dan Hare: The senior defensive back was named to the 2012 Pennsylvania Football News Class AAA All-State Second Team. 

Jason Bellinger: The junior defensive lineman was named to the 2012 Pennsylvania Football News Class AAA All-State Third Team. 

Sara Tarbert: The senior forward led the YAIAA in scoring at 24.2 points per game and averaged 12 rebounds. She finished her career as the all-time leader in points, rebounds, blocks and steals for the Rams. She was named to the 2012-13 Pennsylvania Sports Writers Girls’ Basketball Class AAA All-State Third-Team. 

NORTHEASTERN HIGH SCHOOL

Stephen Braswell: The junior volleyball player was named to the 2012 PVCA Class AA All-State Team, and was also named to the PVCA All-State Tournament Team. 

Luke Braswell: The sophomore volleyball player was named to the 2012 PVCA Class AA All-State Team. 

Khalid Nwandu: The versatile 6-2 senior, a 20.2 scorer for the season, was named to the 2012-13 Pennsylvania Sports Writers Class AAA Basketball All-State Second Team. He finished his three-year career with 1,295 points. He’s headed to Mount St. Mary’s on a basketball scholarship. 

Niki Price: The junior swimmer captured the gold medal in the 100 butterfly at the 2013 PIAA Class AAA Girls’ Swimming Championships. 

RED LAND HIGH SCHOOL

Zach Prexta: The senior volleyball player was named to the 2012 PVCA Class AA All-State Team. 

SUSQUEHANNOCK HIGH SCHOOL

Leah Deter: The senior was named as an opposite on the 2012 PVCA Class AAA All-State girls volleyball team. 

WEST YORK AREA HIGH SCHOOL

Bulldog baseball team: The team became 2012 PIAA Class AAA State Champions following their 9-6 victory over District 3 opponent Lampeter-Strasburg, at Penn State’s Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. 

Jerrin Toomey: The senior outfielder was named to the 2012 Pennsylvania High School Baseball Coaches Association (PHSBCA) Class AAA All-State First Team. 

Brandon Kinneman: The junior first baseman was named to the 2012 PHSBCA Class AAA All-State Second Team. 

Brody Kern: The senior was selected as an offensive lineman on both the 2012 Pennsylvania Sports Writers Class AAA All-State Football Team and the Pennsylvania Football News All-State Second Team. The four-year starting center was also chosen as a member of the Pennsylvania squad for the annual Big 33 Football Classic against Maryland. 

Zack Smith: The senior was selected as a wide receiver on the 2012 Pennsylvania Sports Writers Class AAA All-State Football Team and the Pennsylvania Football News All-State Second Team. He was the leading receiver in the York-Adams League with 64 catches for 1,129 yards, an average of 17.6 yards per catch. 

Brock Snellbaker: The senior was selected as a linebacker on the 2012 Pennsylvania Football News Class AAA All-State Second Team. 

WILLIAM PENN HIGH SCHOOL

Kelvin Nieves: The senior kick returner was named to the Pennsylvania Football News Class AAAA All-State Third Team. 

Tavon Parker: The 6-3 senior, a 20.4 scorer for the season, helped his team record a 27-4 record and was named to the 2012-13 Pennsylvania Sports Writers All-State Basketball Class AAAA Third-Team. He concluded his stellar career with 1,230 points. 

YORK CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

James Dougherty: The senior quarterback was named to the Pennsylvania Football News Class A All-State Third Team. 

YORK SUBURBAN HIGH SCHOOL

Kody Deiter: The senior volleyball player was named to the 2012 PVCA Class AA All-State Team, and was also named to the PVCA All-Tournament Team. 

Fred Gard: The senior volleyball player was named to the 2012 PVCA Class AA All-State Team, and was also named to the PVCA All-Tournament Team. 

Ted Hinnenkamp: The senior volleyball player was named to the 2012 PVCA Class AA All-State Team, and was also named to the PVCA All-Tournament Team. 

Jacob Kauffman: The sophomore volleyball player was named to the 2012 PVCA Class AA All-State Team. 

Jaime Nixon-Alark: The senior kick returner was named to the 2012 Pennsylvania Football News Class AAA All-State Second Team. 

Girls’ 200-Yard Freestyle Relay Team: The Trojans’ quartet of Zowie Day, Carson Gross, Anna Schmittle and Erin Merkle nipped the Villa Maria Academy’s team by eight-hundredths of a second to capture the gold medal at the 2013 PIAA Class AA Swimming Championships. 

EAST STROUDSBURG UNIVERSITY

Dan Johnson (York Suburban): The senior placed eighth in the decathlon at the 2012 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track Championships, and in the process became his school’s first decathlon All-American. He finished second in the high jump (6-6), the javelin (178-06) and the 1,500 meter run (4:41.26). He is the PSAC record holder in both the decathlon (outdoors) and heptathlon (indoors). He will graduate with a 3.8 GPA and will be a second lieutenant in the Army. 

MARS HILL COLLEGE

Dylan Price (South Western): The senior goalkeeper was named to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division II All-American second team. He was also named to the Deep South Conference first team. 

MESSIAH COLLEGE

Alicia Frey (Northern York): The versatile junior was a key factor in the 24-1-1 Falcons winning the 2012 NCAA soccer Division III National Championship, after a 1-0 victory over Emory in the title game. In addition, she was named to the 2012 NSCA Division III All-America Second Team, and to the NSCA All-Mid Atlantic Region First Team. She was also named to the CoSIDA All-American Academic First Team.

<bf>Drew Frey (Northern York):<nm> The junior joined his sister with a national championship as a key performer for the Falcon’s 23-0-2 men’s soccer team, who defeated Ohio Northern 5-1 in the 2012 NCAA Division III championship game.

Aaron Hennigan (Dallastown): The sophomore was a backup goalkeeper for the Falcon men’s soccer team, as they won the 2012 NCAA Division III national championship. 

PENN STATE YORK

Courtney Riggs (Delone Catholic): The Lady Lion averaged 18.8 points, 9.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game, and was named to the 2012-13 United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division II Basketball All-American Second-Team. 

Lauren Riggleman (Susquehannock): The Lady Lion averaged 19.4 points, 5.4 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game, and was named to the 2012-13 United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division II Basketball All-American Second-Team. 

SHIPPENSBURG UNIVERSITY

Julie Brown (Dallastown): The junior swimmer finished 8th in the women’s 50-yard freestyle at the 2013 NCAA Division II Swimming Championships and received her first individual All-American citation, after earning five honorable mention All-American classifications over the last two seasons with the SU relay squads. It caps off a memorable year in the 50 free for Brown that includes a new school record (23.36 seconds in the PSAC prelims) and her first PSAC championship (23.45 seconds). 

WEST CHESTER UNIVERSITY

Josh Heyne (Susquehannock): The senior shortstop played a major role as the Golden Rams baseball team finished 46-10 on the season, and captured the school’s first-ever title at the 2012 NCAA Division II World Series. He had two hits, a run scored and two RBIs in a 9-0 triumph over Delta State in the championship game. In the game before that, he hit a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 2-1 victory over Catawba. Heyne hit .417 (5 for 12) in the four World Series games with two doubles, three RBIs and four runs scored. He was named to the All-Tournament team. West Chester became the first PSAC team ever to win a national championship in baseball. 

Brad Strathmeyer: The freshman swimmer finished 7th in the men’s 1,000-yard freestyle at the 2013 NCAA Division II Swimming Championships and received his first individual All-American citation. He was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Year after winning the 1,650 free, the 1,000 free and the 500 free at the PSAC Championship meet. He helped West Chester win its 15th straight PSAC swimming title. 

YORK COLLEGE

Tim Hartung: The junior placed seventh out of 280 runners in the 2012 NCAA Division III Men’s Cross Country Championships, and in the process became York’s first cross country All-American. His finish was the highest of any runner from the Capital Athletic Conference in the history of the CAC. He was also named the CAC Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year. 

Kim Wayson: The senior became the Spartans’ first field hockey All-American when she was named to the 2012 IWLCA All-America Second Team. 



Shipley Special Achievement Awards



BLAIR ACADEMY, NEW JERSEY (Boarding School)

Brooks Black: The Dover native, a senior wrestler at Blair, and a University of Illinois recruit, won the 285-pound title at the 2013 Prep National Championships in competition held at Lehigh University. As the No. 2 ranked heavyweight in the country, he went 4-0 in the tournament, defeating the No. 8 ranked wrestler in the championship match. Earlier in the season he won titles in the Ironman, Beast of the East and Powerade tournaments. 

DALLASTOWN AREA HIGH SCHOOL

Jared Allison: The senior was named to the 2012 Pennsylvania Track and Field Coaches Association All-State Indoor First Team after clearing 15 feet, 6 inches for a first place finish in the pole vault at the PIAA Indoor Championships. At the YAIAA league meet he obliterated the pole vault record that had stood for 33 years, by a full foot. He then placed second in the District 3 meet, and followed that up with a second place finish at the 2012 PIAA Track and Field Outdoor Championships, where he cleared 16feet 3 inches, and was named to the PTFCA All-State Outdoor second team. 

EASTERN YORK HIGH SCHOOL

Alex Cooley: The senior running back was named to the 2012 Pennsylvania Sports Writers Class AAA All-State football team. He was also named to the 2012 Pennsylvania Football News Class AAA All-State First Team. He finished his high school career as the leading rusher in York-Adams League history, setting a single-season league record in 2012 with 2,845 yards, an average of 284.5 yards per game, and 11.4 yards per carry, while scoring 32 touchdowns. For his career, he had 6,015 rushing yards and 80 touchdowns. He also set PIAA and District 3 records when he rushed for 500 yards in a single game. In his final high school game he rushed for 492 yards and10 touchdowns. These were the two highest single game totals in the history of PIAA football. 

KENNARD-DALE HIGH SCHOOL

Chance Marsteller: The Ram junior wrestler won the 2013 PIAA Class AAA 160-pound championship to claim his third state gold medal and improve his career record to 125-0. He also repeated at the state’s most outstanding wrestler. Earlier he had won his second straight PowerAde Tournament title. He is Flowrestling’s top-ranked pound-for-pound wrestler in the country, and is rated No. 1 nationally in his weight class by InterMat. He was featured in the March 25 edition of Sports Illustrated, in the “Faces in the Crowd” feature. 

WEST YORK AREA HIGH SCHOOL

Kaden Hepler: The senior pitcher was named to the 2012 Pennsylvania High School Baseball Coaches’ Association Class AAA All-State First Team. He finished the season with a sparkling 14-0 record, and his seventh complete game of the season, against Lampeter-Strasburg, gave West York the PIAA Class AAA State Championship. 

YORK CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL

Morgan Klunk: The 5-11 senior guard was named to the 2012-13 Pennsylvania Sports Writers Girls’ Basketball Class AA All-State First Team. She was named to the Third-team last season. She averaged 17.0 points per game and finished with 1,317 career points. She helped the 29-3 Fighting Irish to their eighth straight District 3 title and seventh PIAA championship game in those eight seasons. 

KALAMAZOO UNIVERSITY

Chris Manning (York Suburban): The senior wrapped up his swim career at Kalamazoo by earning All-American honors in three events at the 2012 NCAA Division III Championships, finishing third in the 100 breast, fourth in the 200 IM and fifth in the 200 breast. He’s graduating with eight All-American certificates and five honorable mention certificates during his four-year career. He earned a spot in the United States Olympic Trials by swimming a 100 meter breaststroke qualifying time of 1:04.39. 

MORAVIAN COLLEGE

Micah Leonard (William Penn): The junior earned All-America honors by finishing seventh in the triple jump at the 2012 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. On her final jump of the finals, she hit 39-2½, which stands as a Moravian record. This is the fourth time that she has earned All-America honors, but the first outdoors. 
