William Penn graduate Kelvin Parker granted release from Mount St. Mary's

Kelvin Parker almost spent Sunday night watching the NCAA Tournament selection show with his team at Mount St. Mary's, which made it to the Northeast Conference title game.

Instead, he was working on some homework while confirming he won't be at the school next year.

Parker, a standout on the William Penn boys' basketball team that reached the PIAA Class AAAA finals his sophomore year and won a District 3 championship his senior season, asked and received his release Sunday from Mount St. Mary's. Parker is believed to be one of four to do so. They have seen plenty of change to the program since Parker arrived at the school as a freshman. Then-coach Robert Burke left the team midway through Parker's first season and later resigned. Jamion Christian, a 2004 graduate of the school, was hired as his replacement entering this season.

Parker said he met with Christian on Sunday and was given his release, which he could not comment on specifically.

The Mountaineers finished 18-14 and lost to LIU Brooklyn in the NEC tournament final last Tuesday, giving an automatic NCAA Tournament bid to the Blackbirds instead of Parker and his teammates.

Parker plans to finish his school year at Mount St. Mary's, where he is majoring in business. He also is optimistic about his chances to play elsewhere and is open to Division II schools. As a sophomore, he played 28 games and averaged 5.3 points in nearly 16 minutes per game. He started 26 games and averaged 9.0 points and 4.6 rebounds as a freshman.

Parker laughed when asked if he's hopeful or open to any opportunity of again playing with his younger brother, Tavon, a senior at William Penn who's generated interest from numerous schools, including York College.

"That was a thought, yeah," Kelvin said. "I’m keeping it open, but I just want to see what’s out there first before I make a decision."
