Weekly Rewind (Jan. 28-Feb. 2)

Welcome to February, everybody.

Believe it or not, it's just about time for winter sports to close up shop for the regular season. The basketball playoffs will be here soon as will the postseason for swimming.

On the mats, the wrestling team postseason began and, at least in District 3, ended in the last week.

So, that's where we'll start things off:

1. Could Bermudian Springs have come any closer to winning the District 3 Class AA team title?

The Eagles were seemingly in a great position to beat Boiling Springs before the Bubblers captured three of the final four bouts -- and scored bonus points in each -- to pull even with Bermudian, 31-31, after 14 matches.

And then, in maybe one of the more difficult ways to lose in sports, Bermudian was declared the runner-up on Criterion D, most bouts won. Grant Bond's 14-1 major decision vs. Dalton Becker in the day's final bout pulled the Bubblers even and, being that it was their eighth win, gave them the title.

Bermudian will now host District 6 runner-up Mount Union tonight at 7 p.m. in the preliminary round of the PIAA Class AA tournament.

2. Spring Grove also failed to come away with a District 3 team championship this week.

The Rockets' dreams were dashed Thursday, but unlike Biglerville, Spring Grove's season didn't end in the semifinals.

After a 33-26 loss to Central Dauphin, the Rockets beat Wilson, 30-22, in the 3-AAA third-place dual. At the same time, the Rams were busy pounding Mid-Penn Commonwealth rival Chambersburg, 50-6, for their sixth straight 3-AAA team title.

Spring Grove hosts District 1 third-place finisher Boyertown at 7 p.m. tonight in the preliminary round of the PIAA Class AAA tournament.

3.  To say the boys' basketball game Friday night between Eastern York and York Suburban was thrilling wouldn't do it justice.

Needing a win to stay in the YAIAA Division III race, the Trojans trailed by one with 4.2 seconds left. That's when CJ Boxley took the inbounds pass and, two steps before halfcourt, launched a desperation shot that clanged around before falling through the hoop as time expired for a 62-60 win.

York Suburban, Eastern York and Bermudian Springs all enter this week with 10-3 records in Division III.

4. In a little less thrilling fashion, the William Penn boys wrapped up their sixth straight YAIAA Division I title on Wednesday by beating South Western, 63-51.

Tavon Parked scored eight points for the Bearcats and, two days later, eclipsed 1,000 for his career in a win vs. Spring Grove.

5. In a YAIAA Division I first-place battle Tuesday night, West York was the team standing alone when the dust settled.

Jessica Noll's layup -- off an assist from Emily Wood -- with 26 seconds left lifted the Bulldogs to a 40-39 win vs. Dallastown.

The victory gave West York sole possession of first place in the division. But that lead is perilous: the Bulldogs have a one-game edge on Dallastown and Red Lion. Tuesday night, West York visits the Lions at 7:30 p.m.
