Weekly Rewind (Jan. 14-19)

Don't look now, but the wrestling regular season is entering its final few days this week.

Basketball and swimming have a ways to go yet while wrestling  is just over a week away from postseason action.

The District 3 Team Wrestling Championships begin Jan. 29. So, with the season so close to finishing up, we're starting on the mats for this week's recap.

1. Most of the season, big schools dominate the headlines in District 3. But don't forget that this immediate area is home to three perennial small-school powerhouses.

Saturday night, two of them met in York Springs as Boiling Springs visited Bermudian Springs.

When the dust settled, the Mid-Penn Bubblers had claimed an impressive 33-26 win. The turning point, obviously, was the heavyweight bout where the Bubblers' Noah Davis pinned Bermudian freshman stud Brady Linebaugh in 2:21.

But it wasn't Linebaugh's fault the Eagles lost. Boiling Springs limited bonus points in bouts they lost and scored them in the bouts they won.

Before Bermudian can focus on a potential rematch in the District 3 Class AA Team Championships, the Eagles travel to rival Biglerville on Thursday at 7 p.m. with the winner taking the YAIAA Division II title.

2. Speaking of division titles on the line, Thursday night is also when Spring Grove travels to South Western with the YAIAA Division I title on the line.

Spring Grove improved to 10-0 in the division Saturday by routing Central York, 59-11.

The dual meet will be streamed live at GameTimePA.com with audio from Tom Hunt and Brian Shea.

3. In arguably one of the more entertaining basketball games of the week, Northeastern captured a wild home win vs. Red Lion, 49-45, Friday.

Mike Fox put the Lions on top with just under a minute to play, but Bobcats freshman Donovian Maxwell answered with a 3-pointer for a 47-45 lead with 11 seconds left.

After a failed Red Lion layup, Khalid Nwandu hit two free throws to ice the win. Nwandu, who earlier in the week scored 33 points against Central York to top 1,000 for his career, finished with 27 points Friday.

4. Nwandu wasn't the only YAIAA player to reach 1,000 career points this week.

On Friday, York Catholic senior Morgan Klunk scored 18 points in a 69-11 rout of Littlestown to reach the milestone. The next night, Klunk had 13 points in an impressive 45-39 win vs. Dallastown.

On Monday, West York's Sarah Shearer reached 1,000 career points in the Bulldogs' 58-49 comeback win vs. Susquehannock. West York trailed by nine entering the fourth quarter, but outscored the visiting Warriors 21-3 in the final 32 minutes.

The week ended badly for Shearer, who suffered a right leg injury Friday vs. Dover in a 44-31 loss to the undefeated Eagles. Alayah Hall led Dover (15-0) with 19 points.

5. Monday afternoon, history was made at York County Tech.

The YAIAA committee voted 21-1 to accept Gettysburg as the league's 23rd member beginning in 2014. Kennard-Dale, located roughly 50 miles from Gettysburg, voted against the move.

Gettysburg is a member of the Mid-Penn Conference.

According to current PIAA enrollment figures, Gettysburg is a solid Class AAA school, which will fit nicely into the YAIAA.
