Weekly Rewind (Dec. 17-22)
It was a big week for area teams as we near the end of the calendar year.
There were monumental wins, some huge games/meets and we got a little better of an understanding for who is going to challenge this season and who has some work to do to reach contender status.
Here's a recap of the week that was:
1. If the Dallastown girls' basketball team isn't being considered a legitimate threat in both the YAIAA and the district, someone isn't paying attention.
The Wildcats opened the week with a bang by beating nemesis Red Lion on the Lion's home floor, 45-36. That win was the first for Dallastown vs. Red Lion in eight years and the first the Lions lost in league play in 48 outings.
Shae Grim scored a game-high 12 points and the Wildcat defense limited Red Lion to 13-for-49 shooting.
Don't think Dallastown was satisfied with that win.
On Saturday, the Wildcats ended Kennard-Dale's unbeaten season with a thorough 53-31 win in Fawn Grove.
Rams star Sara Tarbert scored 16 points, but it was far from enough against surging Dallastown.
2. On the boys' side, William Penn also kept rolling through the early season.
The Bearcats followed a signature win over perennial power Harrisburg with an 80-56 drubbing of South Western on Friday in a rematch of the YAIAA tournament championship.
Tavon Parker and Jahaire Wilson took center stage for the high-scoring Bearcats, who found a way to limit 6-foot-5 Parker Bean to a mere eight points.
3. In a highly-anticipated early-season dual meet, Dallastown and York Suburban put on a show Thursday night.
The swimming rivals hosted their first showdown in three years before a packed house at Suburban. The Trojans won the girls' side of things, 51-43, in a meet that was tied after six events.
The boys' meet was nowhere near as close. Dallastown finished in first or second place in nine of the 11 events and blitzed Suburban, 78-16.
4. Raise your hand if you saw this coming: before the calendar flips to 2013, it's pretty clear who is going to win the YAIAA Division I wrestling title.
On Wednesday, South Western prevented Dallastown from scoring bonus points in a narrow 34-29 win. On the flip side, the Mustangs rode four falls to the win.
South Western is one half of the division-title equation.
The other is perennial power Spring Grove. The Rockets handled Dallastown, 49-15, Saturday night, staying perfect and setting up a huge dual meet with South Western on Jan. 24. The Mustangs will host that meet.
