The offseason has been one of adjustments for Eastern York senior Elizabeth Myers. First, she got a new coach in Cheryl Land. Then, she met her soon-to-be next coach, Melanie Ford, at Shepherd University.

Myers gave her verbal agreement to Shepherd in September to play for its women’s basketball program next year.

What does that mean for this season at Eastern York?

"I’ve been trying to develop more of an outside shot and not be just a post player," said Myers, a 5-foot-11 center who averaged 12.9 points per game as a junior and led the Golden Knights to a YAIAA Division III championship.

Their defense of that league crown will come with a new coach, Cheryl Land, who had been an assistant at state power York Catholic.

"I’ve been around Liz for a while now through AAU," Land said. "We talked about being versatile. Coach Ford would tell you she sees Liz playing the 3, 4 and 5. If she’s going to play power forward, she needs to play off the wings and use her jump shot.

"I like versatility from my players."

Initially, Myers considered several Division III colleges, such as Jefferson, Messiah and York College. She said she wanted to stay close to home, but the difference for Shepherd was its nursing program.

"A lot of schools don’t have nursing," Myers said. "I would ask schools and they would say no, so that was very frustrating."

Myers said Shepherd began expressing interest in July and offered "almost a full ride." She visited in September, Shepherd offered a scholarship, and Myers accepted that day.

Located in West Virginia, about two hours from Myers’ current home, Shepherd currently has two players from Pennsylvania on its roster. The closest is a sophomore from Cumberland Valley, 5-9 guard Alex Weakland.
