Weekly Rewind (Oct. 1-6)

The fall sports season is quickly wrapping up. Some sports (tennis, golf) are already in postseason mode while others enter the home stretch. Football is no different as teams continue to jockey for one of three division titles.

1. Russ Stoner believes in his team's shot at winning the YAIAA Division I title. And why not? The second-year coach is leading a revival at Spring Grove. The latest example of the turnaround came Friday night when the Rockets held on for a 41-34 win over Central York. But, there's a long way to go. Week 6 was the first weekend of divisional play for Division I and Division II.

2. Can Division III get any more insane? Biglerville kept pace with front-running Bermudian with a wild 21-20, overtime victory vs. York Catholic. The Canners were aided by two missed field goals and a missed extra point in overtime. This one was no doubt hard to swallow for the Fighting Irish.

3. It really wasn't that long ago that William Penn looked dead in the water. Now? Who knows what the Bearcats can do? William Penn flattened Red Lion, 34-7, Friday in a Division I opener. Kelvin Nieves once again was the Bearcats' work horse. He carried the ball 16 times for 149 yards.

4. On the links, Fairfield golfer Isaiah Logue captured District 3 Class AA hardware by six shots. Logue cruised over runners-up Sam Gallen of Wyomissing and Dylan Beiler of Pequea Valley.

In Class AAA, West York's Josh Rinehart held his own but finished in third behind two Blue Streaks. Manheim Township's Craig Hornberger won the title by two shots over teammate Andy Butler and Rinehart. Butler beat Rinehart on a playoff hole.

5. The girls' tennis postseason also started over the weekend and the finals are set for this afternoon. In Class AAA, Susquehannock's Katie Wagner will meet Central York's Emily Kuhn in a rematch of last year's final, which Wagner won, 6-3, 6-1.

In Class AA, Biglerville standout Carlee Brumgard will take on her third York Catholic opponent in a row when she faces Anna Spoden today.

Consolation and championship matches take place at 4 p.m. today at South Western. The top three finishers in each class receive automatic bids to the District 3 Championships.
