Weekly Rewind (Sept. 12-18)

We lost a day this week thanks to Tuesday's torrential rain storm. Regardless, there were still big games and happenings in the the YAIAA sports world. Let's get started on recapping the week that was.

1. Dover's football team fell from the ranks of perfect teams this week with a resounding 34-14 loss to Red Land. The Eagles graduated 20 seniors from last year’s successful team but hadn’t been tested in the first two weeks of the season. Enter Mid-Penn member Red Land. The Patriots, decked out in stunning all-white uniforms, rushed 58 times for 358 yards in the win.

2. Central York finally pulled itself off the mat this week. After opening with tough losses to West York and Cumberland Valley, the Panthers, who advanced to the District 3 Class AAAA semifinals last year, were in danger of starting 0-3. Luckily, Hempfield came along at the right time. Several Black Knights players were suspended for violating team rules and the Panthers took their frustrations out on the reserves in a 51-14 thrashing. Corey Hartz threw for 255 yards and three touchdowns. Hartz also rushed for a score.

3. West York stayed perfect Friday night, but it wasn’t easy. Against upset-minded Spring Grove, the Bulldogs had to sweat through a tighter-than-expected 21-17 win. The Rockets scored on a blocked punt at the end of the half and a 43-yard pass from Matt Runge to Logan Hagerman with 3:51 left in the third that made it 21-17, but the Rockets couldn’t finish the job.

4. Arguably the biggest win of the weekend belonged to Northeastern. The Bobcats, in their fifth year as a program, took on a Shippensburg team that has recently established itself as an annual District 3 Class AAA qualifier. Plus, the Greyhounds were 2-0. None of that mattered to Northeastern. Behind Alec Miller’s four total touchdowns (three passing, one rushing), the Bobcats chopped down the Greyhounds, 32-27, for their first 3-0 start in program history.

5. The Delone Catholic girls’ volleyball team might have five new starters, but the Squirettes are still rolling. The two-time defending YAIAA Division III champs swept visiting Hanover, 25-14, 25-19, 25-14, Thursday night.

The two programs have been the class of the division the last two years, but both are working in new players. To go along with the five new Delone starters, the Hawkettes had to replace six starters from last year’s 13-5 team that was runner-up to the Squirettes in Division III.

6. The Northeastern girls’ soccer team had to get back on track Saturday night. Shaking off the effects of a loss earlier in the week, the Bobcats did just that. Payton Hauck scored 25 seconds into the match and Northeastern rolled to a 3-1 win over Eastern York.

7. Have you been checking out the Thursday night high school football games on ROOT Sports? If not, you’re missing out. The station has televised two games thus far and the games have been decided by three total points. The slate of games, which feature teams from the greater Pittsburgh area, doesn’t have a bad matchup (on paper, of course) in any of the seven games. But beating the first two weeks will be tough.

Montour forced overtime Sept. 6 with a late touchdown and beat Central Valley, 28-27, by stopping the potential game-winning, two-point conversion. Both teams are ranked in the state in Class AAA by numerous polls. Then, last week, Baldwin converted a late two-point try for an 8-7 lead on Penn Hills but allowed the Indians to march down the field and win, 10-8, with a field goal with 20 seconds to play.

This week's game is Clairton at Monessen (7:30 p.m. Thursday). Both teams are state ranked in Class A according to the Harrisburg Patriot-News. Clairton is No. 1; Monessen No. 9. Complete state rankings -- released this morning -- can be found here.
