Don't be surprised if you see one or two new wrinkles in the South Western football team's offense this season. One of the interesting points new coach Damian Poalucci bought up at media day was that the Mustangs were planning to "open up the Wing-T" and had worked hard on the passing game during the offseason.

The development isn't entirely surprising. Poalucci has worked extensively with South Western's quarterbacks as an assistant over the years.

But who ends up throwing the majority of those passes? That seems up in the air. Poalucci said at media day that a pair of quarterbacks -- senior Mike Duffy and junior Tyler Sterner -- would both see time at the position during the season.

"They're both going to play," Poalucci said at media day. "How it goes, flow of the game wise? Who knows."

At South Western's first official practice Monday, I had a chance to catch with Duffy and get his thoughts on the quarterback competition, as well as some of the new looks the Mustangs might unveil on offense.

Not surprisingly, Duffy was diplomatic on the idea of sharing reps with Sterner.

"Everybody wants to play," Duffy said, "but I have a really good relationship with Tyler. I hope he does the best he can do -- like Tim Tebow, almost. I really just want to win games. If he starts, then he starts."

And on the possibility that he and Sterner might get to show off their arms a little more?

"You want to throw the ball as a quarterback," Duffy said, laughing. "Handing the ball off to (junior running back) Dillon Thomas, that’s cool. Watching him run for 80-yard runs. But every once in a while, you want to get a little pass in here or there."
