Weekly rewind

Here is a look back at the week that was in the high school sports world. We touch on everything from tennis, to a chilly track meet, to the surprise firing of a successful boys' basketball coach.

1. South Western's Anthony Miserendino (AAA) and Hanover's Joel Garrett (AA) walked away as champions of the YAIAA Singles Tennis Tournament on an overcast Monday afternoon at South Western.

2. In a surprise result, Red Lion baseball scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to topple YAIAA Division I front-running Spring Grove on Friday, 2-1.

3. The outcome wasn’t as important as usual Friday when South Western softball hosted the inaugural Angels in the Outfield game to honor three fallen classmates.

4. Strong wind and cold temperatures made for an uncomfortable Dallastown Invitational on Friday.

5. Shawn Shreffler led Chambersburg to two District 3 Class AAAA basketball titles in 15 seasons, including one in February, but he was fired by the Chambersburg Area school board Wednesday night by a 5-4 vote.

6. Harrisburg Patriot-News boys’ basketball beat writer Geoff Morrow didn’t agree with Shreffler’s aforementioned firing and blasted those who made the controversial decision.

7. Susquehannock graduate Josh Heyne is a vital part of perennial power West Chester’s success on the diamond.
