Former Eastern York standout Austin Tillotson transferring from Monmouth

Former Eastern York basketball standout Austin Tillotson said Saturday he plans to transfer from Monmouth University after one year at the school.

In a phone conversation, Tillotson called the decision a "personal" one, and said he "didn’t really feel comfortable" at the school.

"I was bought in by the coaches previous, and I kind of jumped into it a little too quick," Tillotson said. "I think I probably should have looked at my options.

"I never got very comfortable. I just got to do what I feel is right."

Tillotson was originally recruited to Monmouth by former coach Dave Calloway, who resigned under pressure after the 2010-11 season. He was replaced by former North Carolina point guard King Rice.

When asked if his decision to transfer was specifically due to differences with the coaching staff, Tillotson declined to comment.

Tillotson said playing time wasn't an issue. He started in 18 games for the Hawks as a freshman and averaged 6 points.

"I had thoughts throughout the beginning of the year (of transferring), but then everything started falling in place with me," Tillotson said. "I started doing really well and all the negative thoughts kind of went away. Toward right when the season was over, I just kept having thoughts. If I’m going to continually think about something like this, then that’s obviously a problem.

"I made a family here and it’s going to be hard. I’m going to miss them."

Tillotson said he asked the school for his release Friday morning. He plans to take a few days to collect his thoughts before beginning to decide his next school of choice.
