Small YAIAA contingent outstanding at PIAA swimming Thursday

While the YAIAA didn’t have many athletes competing in Thursday’s second day of the PIAA swimming and diving championships, the good news is that every one of those competitors will return for tonight’s finals or consolations at Bucknell University.

It took a state record to best Morgan Pfaff’s 100 backstroke time in this morning’s PIAA Class AAA preliminaries. The Red Lion senior swam a terrific 55.12, second only to Christina Leander of West Chester East, who set a PIAA mark with her time of 54.33. That should make for an interesting final tonight.

Dallastown’s Alyssa Bixler earned her spot in the medal finals with her morning swim of 52.34, which was a nice bump up from her 10th seed coming into states.

The Red Lion girls’ 400 free relay, comprising of Courtney Schaefer, Emily Smeltzer, Jesse North and Pfaff, qualified for the evening’s consolation swim, with their 3:36.81.

Dallastown sophomore Trevor Hine scored the 11th best time in the AAA boys 500 freestyle, when he swam a 4:40.42. He returns for tonight’s consolations.
