Red Lion's Telp picks up a pair of offers

His football experience may be limited, but that has not kept Red Lion's David Telp from landing on the radars of several Division I football programs.

The rising senior defensive end, who played his first down of organized football last fall, recently picked up verbal scholarship offers from Temple and Cincinnati, Lions coach Pat Conrad said. More offers, it seems, could be on the way.

The main reason: Telp's rare combination of top-level speed and spring-loaded athleticism. While his size (6-foot-4, 210 pounds) is not yet ideal for a college defensive end, Telp's elite physical tools make him an enticing project.

"He's just a freak kid athletically," Conrad said. "He has a heck of an impact."

In his first exposure to varsity football last season, Telp ran down 61 tackles and six sacks.

Meanwhile, Red Lion rising senior quarterback Tanner Klinefelter has also received some Division I glances, Conrad said, but no offers. Syracuse and Boston College recently expressed interest, and Klinefelter also figures to attract suitors at the Division I FCS and Division II levels.

In his first full season as a starter last fall, the 6-foot-2 passer piled up 1,983 yards and 22 touchdowns. He completed 61.9 percent of his throws.
