Eastern York set to hire football coach

The YAIAA's final football coaching vacancy could soon be filled. The Eastern York school board will vote tonight whether to approve Richard Brubaker as the Golden Knights' new head football coach, Eastern athletic director Jack Predix confirmed Wednesday. Brubaker spent last season as an assistant on the Golden Knights staff. If hired, Brubaker would replace Jeff Shutter, who did not return following Eastern's 3-7 season in 2010. Shutter coached 13 seasons with the Golden Knights, but his teams won just 14 games in the last five years. Eastern York first advertised its football coaching vacancy in early March -- more than three months ago. The school's athletic department has gone through a transition in that time; longtime athletic director Karl Oswald retired after the school year, and Predix took over the job full-time this week. At this point, keeping some sort of continuity could be vital for the program -- the start of fall sports practices is barely more than two months away. The Golden Knights are a bit late in the game making this hire. The YAIAA's other four football coaching hires -- at Spring Grove, York Catholic, York Suburban and York County Tech -- were all filled by late February. "We picked who we felt was the best candidate," Predix said of Brubaker. "We anticipate that he'll be approved tomorrow night."
