Live from the D-3 Track Championships: Day 2
SHIPPENSBURG -- Welcome to our Day 2 live blog of the District 3 Track and Field Championships. I'm here on a sunny (finally) day at Seth Grove Stadium, where I'll be posting updates throughout the morning and afternoon. The first gun sounds at 9 a.m., with a full slate of events taking us all the way up to 5 p.m. Refresh frequently to read new updates below. To catch up on all Friday's action at Shippensburg, read Steve Navaroli's story. __________________________________________ 5:27 p.m. -- One final note to pass along: The best team finish of the day goes to the Littlestown boys, who ended up third in boys' Class AAA. That'll do it for now. Thanks to everybody who tuned in today, and be sure to check out the coverage in tomorrow's York Sunday News. 5:00 p.m. -- In the girls' Class AAA 1,600 relay, Central York records a personal-best time of 4:03.63. That was good enough for a fourth-place finish, and a spot in next weekend's state meet. The quartet was blown away by the time, and the state berth. "I cried," said Briana Fells, the group's lone senior. 4:13 p.m. -- Getting to the last few events here... Central York's Megan Lundy wins her third medal, and her second individual one, with a sixth-place showing in the 200. Littlestown's Brandon Study collects his second fifth-place finish of the day, this time in the Class AA 200. Red Lion's Ryan Knisely is also up to medal No. 2, thanks to his fifth-place finish in the Class AAA 200. Finally, two more medals for Fairfield, which has had a fine showing. Kelly Quealy placed third in the Class AA 800 meters, while Sarah Hunt took fifth in the 200. 3:11 p.m. -- Littlestown's Austin Hornbrook collects two medals -- and two state qualifying spots -- in a matter of minutes. First, he leaped to a third-place finish in the Class AA triple jump (42-07.75). Then he helped the Thunderbolts finish fourth in the 400 relay (44.16). In the boys' Class AAA 400 relay, Central York sprints to a seventh-place finish. We still have the 800 meters, the 1600 relay and the 200 meters left to go. 2:44 p.m. -- Central York's Semi Ibikunle, the top seed in the boys' Class AAA long jump, settles for fourth in the event. His top jump was 21-10.50. Other 400 meters results: Hanover's Tyler Kiick finishes fifth in the Class AA race (51.94), while Red Lion's Ryan Knisely grabbed third in the Class AAA event (49.23). In the girls' Class AAA 400 relay, Central York finishes fifth. 2:05 p.m. -- Yet another second place finish for a YAIAA athlete. This time its Megan Lundy, who earns silver in the Class AAA 400 meters. Meanwhile, Stormie Hibshman has added a fifth-place finish in the shot put to her earlier gold medal from today. 1:40 p.m. -- The 1,600 meter races are up now. York Catholic's Taylor Falvey has added a silver medal to the gold she won in yesterday's 3,200 meters. Falvey finished second in the Class AA 1,600 (5:20.07), while Hanover's Zoie Cleary took fourth. In the girls' Class AAA race, Central York's Kelsey Ibarra earned eighth place. In the Class AA boys' race, brothers Chris Sauvageau (Delone Catholic) and Xavier Sauvageau (Littlestown) both qualified for states by finishing third and fourth, respectively. "It's great competition getting to run with him," Xavier Sauvageau said. "This is one of the last times." Finally, in Class AAA boys', Kennard-Dale's Brandon Taylor earned a spot in states with his sixth-place finish (4:22.33). Taylor nearly missed the entire season with an injury. Read more about it here. "I had a horrible start to the season, just a hard time," Taylor said. "To be here now, it's great." Taylor barely missed out on the medal stand Friday, settling for ninth in the 3,200. "I was kind of mad at yesterday," Taylor said. "I wasn't feeling right, I wasn't feeling like racing. Today I just wanted to come out and run my best." 1:03 p.m. -- Some more results from the sprints... Dallastown's Edema Enyong (12.53) and South Western's MaKenzie Wall (12.81) finished fifth and sixth, respectively, the girls' Class AAA 100 meters. In the boys' Class AA 100 meters, Biglerville's Kyle Bobo finished second with a time of 11.20. This was the senior's first year running track. His first practice run at the beginning of the season produced an 11.60. Not a bad improvement. "I got second so I'm obviously not happy," Bobo said. "I felt a little tight, that wasn't my best time." 12:49 p.m. -- And we're back, this time with our first district champion of the day. Delone Catholic's Stormie Hibshman won the girls' Class AA javelin with a heave of 129 feet, 4 inches. More on her story later. In the girls' 100 hurdles, Biglerville's Chrystal Charlesworth earned her second third-place medal of the day, while Bermudian Springs' Elana Keller placed fifth. In the Class AAA race, Central York's Jazzmyn Jules earned sixth place. In the boy's 110 hurdles, Bermudian's Brett Warner finished second in the Class AA race with a time of 15.42. Warner ran last season with a broken bone in his left leg, and had battled further injuries to his leg this season. The plate doctors inserted to fix the broken bone has caused complications to his calf muscle, Warner said. With that in mind, Warner was thrilled with Saturday's result. "If I was a distance runner, I think I'd be fine, but sprinting, staying up on my toes is tough," Warner said "I'm definitely happy. I did not expect to make it this far." In the boys' Class AAA race, Dallastown's Derek Mayfield placed fourth. 11:29 a.m. -- Jared Allison's season took a detour in mid-March. That's when Dallastown's junior pole vaulter fractured one of the lumbar vertebrae in his back. Allison missed three weeks. The District 3 meet was only Allison's fourth meet this season. All which made his third-place finish even more impressive. Allison vaulted a season-best 14 feet, 3 inches. "When I came back from the back injury, that was hard," Allison said. "The first time I jumped after that, I was just like 'This stinks. This is hard.' But then after being back at it, I was better." Allison wasn't able to clear 14-06, which also happens to be Dallastown's school record. That's a target Allison will shoot for next week. There's a bit of lull here at Shippensburg. The 100 and 110 hurdles are due to start at 12:15. 11:14 a.m. -- Jamilla Janneh hoped to leave Shippensburg this week with district gold. In the end, a trio of state-qualifying scores wasn't a bad consolation. The New Oxford junior placed fifth in the girls' Class AAA long jump Saturday (36 feet, 4 inches), good for a spot at next week's PIAA championships. She had already notched qualifying scores in the long and high jumps Friday. Janneh was one of the YAIAA's top gold-medal contenders coming into the weekend; she was seeded first in the high jump and triple jump. But any disappointment in her spot on the medal stand was soothed by the knowledge that she'll have three chances at redemption next weekend. "I expected to jump a little bit better," Janneh said. "Once again I did what I need to do. "That's why I can't be too disappointed. I did what I wanted to do, which was make it to states." Janneh added a sore right shin has bothered her the past two weeks, but added "it shouldn't affect me too much." 11:04 a.m. -- Some rapid-fire results... In girls' Class AA 3,200 relay, Hanover earns third. York Catholic places eighth. Boiling Springs set a new district record in the event. In the girls' Class AA high jump, defending district champion Alyssa Reichart settled for third place with a height of 4-10. She was part of a four-way tie for third place. Finally, the boys' 3,200 relay team from Littlestown took fourth place. 9:44 a.m.-- In the boys' Class AAA 300 hurdles, Dallastown's Bobby Esiaba finished third with a time of 39.50. Teammate Jonathan Dadeboe placed eighth. Esiaba's time was a personal best. "I'm happy with it," Esiaba said after coming off the medal stand. "Not content though." The 3,200 relays are up next. 9:19 a.m. -- It's official, we have our first YAIAA medalist of the day. Biglerville's Chrystal Charlesworth takes third place in the girl's Class AA 300 hurdles. In the Class AAA 300 hurdles, Red Lion's Aliyah Strausbaugh and Dallastown's Sally Trout earn sixth and seventh, respectively.
