One-game playoff set for York Catholic, Delone

The final spot in the YAIAA baseball playoffs will be doled out Thursday, when a pair of Division IV rivals meet for a third time this season. York Catholic will travel to Delone Catholic tomorrow at 4:15 p.m., with the winner earning a spot in Saturday's YAIAA semifinals. The teams both finished 14-1 in in the Division IV standings and split their two meetings this season. And since both beat all their other divisional opponents, any other tiebreakers were moot. Both teams survived their regular season finales Tuesday to ensure the one-game playoff would take place. Delone won a coin flip for the right to host the rubber match. Delone Catholic won the teams' first meeting of the year, 5-4, in extra innings. York Catholic won the rematch, 7-4, on April 29. That was Delone's only loss of the season. The winner of Thursday's playoff would advance to a semifinal matchup with Division III champion Bermudian Springs on Saturday morning at New Oxford. First pitch for that one is scheduled for 11 a.m. Division I winners Dallastown and Division II champion New Oxford will play in the other semifinal at 1 p.m. at York Suburban. The winners will meet in the league championship game at Littlestown High School on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Thursday's playoff may not be the last time Delone Catholic and York Catholic meet, either. They're currently rated first and second, respectively, in the latest District 3 Class AA power rankings.
