Reports: Lonergan leaving Vermont to take George Washington job
Ah, the college coaching carousel. It never seems to stop. On the same day longtime Maryland men's basketball coach Gary Williams announced he was stepping down, another job in the Washington D.C. area appears to have been filled. A report by CSN Washington states that Vermont men's hoops coach Mike Lonergan will be named the new coach at George Washington. ESPN.com has also reported the two sides are negotiating. This qualifies as news around here because Dallastown guard Four McGlynn has signed to play for Vermont next season. No word yet on what this move means for McGlynn's future -- stay tuned on that one -- but this seems to have developed into a theme for this year's YAIAA standout athletes. Eastern York basketball duo Andrew Nicholas and Austin Tillotson stick with Monmouth after a coaching change. Red Lion football standout Andrew Zeller did the same with Maryland. And Dallastown linebacker Ben Kline eventually dumped Pittsburgh for Penn State, after the Panthers jettisoned Dave Wannstedt. McGlynn, a versatile 6-foot-2 guard, turned in a sterling senior season this winter, which saw him average 23.8 points en route to a third-team Class AAAA all-state selection. He finished his career with 1,852 points, the eighth best in YAIAA history and the most ever by a Class AAAA player in the league. Because McGlynn has signed his National Letter of Intent with Vermont, he would have to request a release from the school to explore other options.
