Fisher steps down as Eastern basketball coach

Larry Fisher's highly successful eight-year run as Eastern York boys' basketball coach has come to an end. Fisher, 42, confirmed Wednesday that he has stepped down as the Golden Knights coach, ending a tenure that produced two YAIAA league championships and a District 3 Class AAA title. Fisher informed Eastern York athletic director Karl Oswald of his decision last week. "I feel pretty strong in making the decision," Fisher said. "I'm making it for No. 1, obviously to spend time with my family. These last several years with all the summer obligations and how we've played throughout the season, I obviously had less and less time to spend with the family." Fisher finished with a 169-54 record at Eastern. His team's won 101 games in the last four years, led by the all-state tandem of Andrew Nicholas and Austin Tillotson. Both have committed to play at Monmouth next season. The apex of the Golden Knights run occurred two winters ago, when Eastern won its first District 3 championship in 22 years. "At the end of every season, you assess what your goals are and where you want to go from here," Fisher said. "This is not different than any other season, other than it's sort of the end of an era with Andrew and Austin moving on, and the relationships that I've had with a number of seniors over the years. "At this point I felt if I stuck around another year I'd develop these kind of relationships with other kids coming up, and I'd feel compelled to stick around for another four or five years."
