Change coming to District 3-A football playoffs

Expect the District 3 Class A football players to look a bit smaller next year. And that's not necessarily a bad thing. Courtesy of rodfrisco.com and the District 3 website, a district committee voted unanimously Tuesday to decrease the number of teams that qualify for the Class A football playoffs from eight to four. The move was a no-brainer. The number of Class A playoff participants in the district has decreased of late; all but five schools opted out of last year's playoff field. The pending merger of Class A schools Reading Central Catholic and Reading Holy Name was another big consideration. The new school -- Berks Catholic -- will likely compete in Class AA, thereby slashing the district's number of Class A teams from 10 to eight. The single-A teams who make districts will receive a bye week on Week 11, then play the district semifinals the following week. The Class A championship game will be played at Hersheypark Stadium on Friday, Nov. 25. The change will affect two YAIAA schools: York Catholic and Fairfield. The Fighting Irish were the No. 2 seed in last year's Class A tournament, while Fairfield will hope to improve on an 0-9 showing in 2010. The playoffs for Classes AAAA, AAA and AA will all remain unchanged from their 2010 format.
