Kelvin Parker commits to Mount St. Mary's
William Penn basketball standout Kelvin Parker has committed to Division I Mount St. Mary's, Bearcats coach Troy Sowers said Thursday. The 6-foot-4 forward was one of the top players in the area this season, showing an ability to take over games with his superior athleticism or well-rounded skill set. Besides averaging a team-high 19.7 points per game, Parker also chipped in 7.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 3 steals and 2.2 blocks per game for the District 3, Class AAAA champions. Parker finished his career with 1,451 points, the most in William Penn boys' basketball history. He is the program's first Division I recruit since Sam Sutton, who graduated from William Penn in 1997 before playing at St. Francis and Towson. "I knew he was going to have to demonstrate his ability to play Division I during the season. And he really put the team on his back," William Penn coach Troy Sowers said. "He visited (Mount St. Mary's) a month ago. He just enjoyed the atmosphere. He liked the coaches. He liked the facility. He and his mom and his dad yesterday went down and toured the campus. "I think it's a perfect place for him." Parker chose Mount St. Mary's over South Carolina-Aiken, a Division II program coached by former William Penn coach Vince Alexander.
