We're not quite done with winter sports here on this blog. We'll have more to come in the next few days, as we reflect on the basketball season that was. But for now, we begin to cast an eye toward the spring. And we might as well start with the sport that seems to be growing faster than any other here in York County. I spent a chunk of my Saturday at Lanco Fieldhouse in East Petersburg for the sixth-annual World's Longest Running Lacrosse Game. The event, which is the brainchild of Eastern Knights Lacrosse club president Bob Rhein, featured 15 hours of continuous play split between two fields, and attracted a record 500 participants from York County's youth lacrosse leagues. More evidence of just how much the sport is taking root in this area. Even more important, proceeds from the event went to a good cause. Rhein helped present the Make-A-Wish foundation with a $3,400 check, which will go toward granting a wish for Eastern York sophomore Breeanna Taylor, who was diagnosed with Leukemia in January. The event was originally started to honor Travis Sipe, a member of the York Lacrosse Club who passed away in 2004 from injuries suffered in a 2001 car accident. Since then, the event has raised money to support Make-A-Wish. This year, the WLRLG also supported for Wigs for Kids, a non-profit organization which makes custom hairpieces for children who have lost their hair because of medical circumstances. For more information on how to donate to either cause, you can go to wishgreaterpa.org and wigsforkids.org.
