Nicholas nears YAIAA scoring record

Barring a seemingly unlikely turn of events, it looks like Jacob Iati's reign as the YAIAA's career scoring leader will last only three years. Unless Eastern York suffers an early exit in the District 3 playoffs -- something that, at this point, would be quite a surprise -- it looks like 6-foot-6 senior Andrew Nicholas will become the YAIAA's all-time leading scorer before season's end. The Golden Knights wing needs just 95 points to pass the 2,388 points posted by Iati, a 2008 graduate of York Catholic. Nicholas, a Monmouth commit, is averaging 21.5 points per game so far this season. The Golden Knights (18-3) open their postseason on Saturday, when they play Dover in a YAIAA tournament quarterfinal at 8 p.m. at Spring Grove High School. "It's a mark of consistent excellent performance over a long period of time," Eastern coach Larry Fisher said tonight. "All the games we've played. The team has to be successful so you can play the number of games. "You have to be a go-to guy for all four years as a scorer. You have to come in as a freshman hit the floor running. You have to be healthy. Andrew has never missed a start. He's started every game all four years. That's something that goes unnoticed. When you think of all the bumps, the bruises, the flu." In addition to Nicholas' potential record, we've seen a flurry of scoring milestones in the last week. Among them: - Hanover's Pete Yingst passed the 1,000-point barrier Wednesday against Biglerville. - Susquehannock girls' senior Chloe Mistovich also hit 1,000 Friday. - York Suburban senior Kevin Donahue reached 1,000 and helped his team secure a YAIAA tournament spot in the process.
