District playoffs: Who's in and who's out?

UPDATE (Feb. 10): According to today's final power rankings, it looks like the South Western boys will indeed sneak into the District 3 Class AAAA playoffs. Thanks to some favorable results last night, the Mustangs moved up to the 20th and final playoff spot. You can view to full slate of final power rankings here. As soon as we have full brackets posted, I'll be sure to post those, as well. *********** Tonight is the last night basketball teams across District 3 can make their case for the district playoffs. Starting tomorrow, any basketball games played -- boys or girls -- will not count toward a team's district power rankings. Which means after tonight, we should know the seeds and first-round matchups for the teams that qualify for the District 3 playoffs. After the jump, I've put together a quick run down of where YAIAA teams currently stand in the power rankings. Remember, while there are almost no local games on the schedule for tonight, teams in other parts of the district are playing this evening, and those results could cause the final power rankings to fluctuate a bit. A copy of the district playoff schedule can be found here. DISTRICT 3 BOYS' POWER RANKINGSClass AAAA (Top 20 qualify) 1. William Penn (21-1) 4. Dallastown (18-4) 14. Central York (15-7) 18. Dover (15-7) 21. South Western (13-9)* * -- The Mustangs are on the outside looking in after last night's loss to Dallastown. But all might not be lost. The 20th and final seed, Warwick, plays 13th-seeded Manheim Township tonight, while No. 19 seed Muhlenberg visits No. 22 seed Daniel Boone. Depending on how those games pan out, South Western might -- and I stress "might" -- be able to sneak in. Class AAA (Top 20 qualify) 3. Eastern York (18-3) 5. Northeastern (16-6) 12. York Suburban (14-7) 14. West York (10-10) 18. Kennard-Dale (11-11) Class AA (Top 10 qualify) 1. Hanover (17-4) 2. Delone Catholic (15-7) 10. York Catholic (8-14) Class A (Top 12 qualify) 6. New Hope Academy (8-7) 11. Christian School of York (12-7) DISTRICT 3 GIRLS' BASKETBALL POWER RANKINGS Note: The power rankings currently posted on the district website do NOT include Tuesday's games, so expect the rankings listed below to fluctuate a bit. Class AAAA (Top 20 qualify) 1. Red Lion (20-0) 14. Dallastown (16-6) 23. Spring Grove (12-10)* * -- Hard as it might be to believe, Spring Grove might win Division II and be a No. 2 seed in the YAIAA tournament, and still not make the district playoffs. Class AAA (Top 20 qualify) 6. Eastern York (17-4) 7. Kennard-Dale (15-7) 9. Dover (13-9) 17. York Suburban (10-10) 18. Susquehannock (11-10) 19. West York (8-13) *-- Remember, Susquehannock beat York Suburban on Tuesday, in a game that has not yet been factored into these standings. Class AA (Top 10 qualify) 1. York Catholic (22-0) 2. Delone Catholic (17-5) 4. Biglerville (12-9) 7. Hanover (9-13) Class A (Top 12 qualify) 7. Christian School of York (15-5) **** One last note of interest. Remember that the district changed its criteria before this season for who gets into the playoffs. Whereas in the past, any team with an above-.500 record qualified for the postseason, this year the district decided to cap the number of qualifiers in Class AAAA and AAA at 20. You see some cases (West York girls) where that helped YAIAA teams, but perhaps more (Spring Grove girls, South Western boys) where it cost local teams a shot at the playoffs.
