Dallastown steps up to support Eastern's Taylor

The York-Adams basketball community continues to rally around Breeanna Taylor, the Eastern York sophomore who was diagnosed with Leukemia earlier this month. The Dallastown girls' basketball team used last night's game against Eastern to honor Taylor, a member of the Golden Knights junior varsity team who is currently undergoing cancer treatments at Penn State's Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. The Wildcats decorated their gym with orange balloons and signs, and both teams wore orange socks and headbands. Orange is the color used to represent the fight against leukemia. In addition, Dallastown held a raffle and bake sale to help raise money for Taylor's family, and also planned to donate some of the night's concession stand sales. "The story came out about what other schools were doing, I think one school gave them a teddy bear," Dallastown coach Mary Kurnat said. "We were thinking 'What can we do bigger to really help this person long-term?' "We have a couple kids on Eastern's team that used to come in and play pick-up with us during the summer. So it's just a great relationship between us and Eastern." Dallastown's effort was the latest wave of support for Taylor. Eastern held its own fundraising event at a game last week, and will continue to take donations on Taylor's behalf for the rest of the season. The Golden Knights had warm-up shirts made up with the phrase "Ballin' 4 Bree" on the front and Taylor's name and No. 30 on the back. The efforts Saturday were certainly appreciated. Eastern coach Bob Heiser got a little choked up while addressing the crowd before the game. "We're just so glad they did this," Heiser said afterward. "And it means a lot to Bree. I had a chance to talk to her today. She's doing great." A website has been set up where those interested can follow Breeanna's progress. You can find that by clicking here.
