Parker closes in on William Penn scoring record

Within the next few weeks, Kelvin Parker will likely become the all-time leading boys scorer in William Penn's proud basketball history. The high-flying 6-foot-4 senior needs 110 points to tie 1993 graduate Scott Doll's record of 1,272 points. It's quite an accomplishment, considering both William Penn's impressive tradition and some of the great players that have preceded Parker. After the team's win against Northeastern on Friday, both Parker talked a bit about the looming milestone to Daily Record/Sunday News reporter Jim Seip. "It really would be a big accomplishment," Parker said. "I really want to break it. ... I'll enjoy it when it comes." William Penn coach Troy Sowers also chimed in. "It's a tremendous accomplishment because not many York High guys even get to score a thousand points because we have such talented classes," Sowers said. "So very rarely do you have a freshman or sophomore who can play varsity, because you have so many talented juniors and seniors. "As a sophomore he led us to the state championship game. His amazing play demonstrates that you have to be an amazing player to be York High's all-time." Speaking of milestones, Sowers celebrated one of his own on Friday. The coach secured the 100th win of his William Penn coaching career on Wednesday against Dover, and was honored with a commemorative basketball prior to Friday's game. Sowers now needs a mere 209 more wins to tie Don Cockley (who coached from 1945-64) for the program's all-time record.
