Daunting stretch looms for Eastern York

The Eastern York boys basketball team should find out a bit more about itself these next two weeks. Starting Sunday, the Golden Knights (9-0) will embark on a 13-day gauntlet that includes three games against some of the state's top programs. Eastern will meet District 2 stalwart Scranton on Sunday in Harrisburg. That will be followed by two matchups against Philadelphia-area powers: Archbishop Carroll on Sunday, Jan. 23 at Philadelphia University; and Chester on Friday, Jan. 28 at Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School. In the Patriot-News' latest boys' state rankings, Chester was ranked the No. 1 team in Class AAAA, and Archbishop Carroll the top team in Class AAA. Eastern, the defending District 3 champion, was slotted at No. 2 in Class AAA. And Scranton (9-2) is no slouch, either. On Wednesday, Eastern York coach Larry Fisher referred to them as "a good Division III college team." Oh, and those games are only in addition to Eastern's normal YAIAA schedule. In all, the Golden Knights will play seven games in those 13 days. "Glutton for punishment? Maybe," Fisher said. "We're just trying to find anybody who will play us at the top level. Whatever happens, happens. We'll learn from it. We'll find out how good we can be."
