YAIAA boys' basketball power rankings, 1/8

We hit a bit of a holiday lull here on the Beat, but what better way to break out of that than with a fresh round of our boys' and girls' basketball power rankings. We'll start with the boys' Top 10, which saw a new team claim the top spot thanks to a big win on Friday... Previous week's rank is in parentheses... 1. William Penn (3) -- The Bearcats (9-1) cemented the top spot with an impressive victory against Dallastown on Friday. They've won eight in a row, led by the steady scoring of Kelvin Parker (19 ppg) and double-double machine Zach Newby. 2. Eastern York (2) -- The Golden Knights (8-0) survived their early-season stretch without Austin Tillotson, and now have the point guard back ahead of schedule. Eastern has won thanks mostly to an airtight defense that is allowing just 36.5 points per game. 3. Dallastown (1) -- The Wildcats (10-2) finally cooled a bit this week, dropping their first two games of the season. But this team has too much offensive firepower and too much size not to rebound. And you can be sure they'll have an eye on that rematch with William Penn on Feb. 1. 4. Dover (7) -- Few could have predicted an Eagles team that lost three starters and 50 percent of its scoring would start the season 10-1. But a stingy defense that allowed just 17 points to New Oxford on Friday has helped Dover to the best start in Brian Schmoyer's six seasons at the helm. 5. Hanover (6) -- If you haven't seen Pete Yingst play yet, you're missing out. The Nighthawks senior guard is second in the league in scoring (24.5 ppg), and has been the driving force behind Hanover's impressive 9-1 start. 6. Central York (4) -- Don't let the 5-4 record fool you. The Panthers four losses were all to high-quality opponents, and all were by double-digits. If anything, the hefty schedule might help the Panthers come playoff time. 7. Northeastern (9) -- Hard to argue with the Bobcats' (7-2) start to the season. A year after going 5-16, Northeastern has already eclipsed its win total from last year and positioned itself in the thick of what may be the most wide-open Division II race in years. 8. York Suburban (8) -- There's nothing flashy about them, but the Trojans (8-4) have solid coaching and one of the area's underrated scorers in senior Kevin Donahue. Plus, Suburban boasts a track record of proven late-season success. 9. Susquehannock (NR) -- The Warriors (7-4) appear to have taken a step forward under second-year coach John Zerfing, and a district playoff spot is certainly within the realm of possibility. 10. South Western (NR) -- Tough week for the Mustangs (7-5), who lost a pair of games to Division I contenders William Penn and Central York. But this is an interesting, young team that should get better as the year goes on. Honorable mention: Kennard-Dale, Delone Catholic, West York
