YAIAA sends four to inaugural Chesapeake Bowl
Four of the YAIAA's top football players will take part in the inaugural Chesapeake Bowl, a regional showcase featuring some of the top senior talent from the Mid-Atlantic area. Dallastown linebacker Ben Kline, Red Lion lineman Andrew Zeller, York Catholic kicker Brett Moore and Spring Grove punter Keith Stambaugh will all compete for the North squad, comprised of elite players from Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. The game is set for Dec. 30 at Towson University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. The selections for the game were chosen based on their current Scout.com rankings, their on field performances, and by an invitation-only tryout that took place in August. More than 400 players were selected to try out, and of those only the top 100 (50 on each squad) were chosen. The North will face a South team made up of players from the Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington D.C. areas. From the press release:
Players and coaches will be hosted over a four day period with activities and practices leading up to the game to provide a true bowl-like atmosphere. The practices and game itself will also provide the players an additional opportunity to showcase their skills in an effort to impress college coaches and help their recruiting process.Kline and Zeller have both built lofty reputations in this area and beyond. Kline, who originally verballed to Pitt, led Dallastown with 152 tackles this season and added 13 touchdowns on offense. Zeller, a Maryland recruit, started both ways for Red Lion and recorded 67 tackles and seven sacks on defense. Moore was on the radar of some bigger schools coming into this season. He missed part of the season with injuries, but still kicked three field goals, 25 extra points and 15 touchbacks. Stambaugh was one of the area's best punters this year, booting away 44 balls for an average of 38.9 yards. The game will attract no shortage of talent. Of the 50 players on the north roster, 41 have either verbally committed to or are entertaining offers from Division I schools.
